Rebellion: n. doing violent action(s) and/or disobedience to authority(s)

There is a major difference between a revolt or revolution and a rebellion. A revolt or revolution is an attempt, sometimes violently, to take over or change the leadership and a rebellion is frequently resistance or disobedience, sometimes violent, to one or more laws which you disagree with.

A rebellion is a way of protesting a bad law(s) but it usually does not mean that you also want to take over or change the leadership. Many businesses not paying an unjust licensing fee is a form of rebellion and many taxpayers not paying their taxes is also a form of rebellion.

If enough citizens rebel against or disobey a law then usually those in authority change or eliminate the law unless it is a dictatorship which could then proceed to enforce the law through violent means.
