Symbol: n. a subset which corresponds to and identifies an identical subset(s) which is frequently larger spatially

An abbreviation or logo is frequently a symbol for a word as is a note on a bar a symbol for a musical note. The letters of the alphabet are symbols for the sounds they make.

The star of David and cross are symbols of the Jewish and Christian religions. Lol when texting is a symbol for laugh out loud and is just one more example of the tendency of humans to want to make communication more efficient or shorter with the use of symbols.
