Reciprocation: n. doing one or more reaction(s) such as returning a favor(s) and/or fighting back

Reciprocating a favor or gift on a holiday is relatively common behavior. A verbal attack with name calling may be reciprocated with name calling or other defensive actions such as insults, ridicule, and put downs.

Reciprocating basically means reacting and even though silence or non violence is frequently the best response or an absence of reciprocation to an attack, not many humans are capable of such emotional control when assaulted with abuse or bad behavior.
