Placate: v. to make less angry and/or hostile with a subset(s)
Sometimes we do or say something which makes someone angry or hostile towards us. Apologizing sometimes works if it was our fault and we can sometimes offer to do a favor or compensate the human for whatever damage we may have done to them.
Placating a spouse or offspring is similar but not identical to placating a fellow worker or friend. Anger and hostility subside rather quickly in good families but in public placating someone may not succeed in the short duration if they have been hurt or offended considerably.
Social etiquette is a little different than private family etiquette and knowing the difference can frequently avoid angry confrontations and misunderstandings.
