Estimate: v. to approximately calculate the (time and/or position) and/or (quantity and/or degree) and/or value of a subset(s)
We are often asked to estimate the time of arrival or departure or how old something is, the location of the arrival or departure, the quantity of something, how hot or cold good or bad something is or the degree to which the thing exists, and finally the value of something may be estimated.
Estimating ability is very important in some things because over estimating the value of an item may result in losing much money in the process or wasting it by paying too dearly.
Historically it was your responsibility to estimate the approximate time for arriving at a location by car. Today GPS and Google maps does the estimate for you and is a very close approximation to the real time of travel from one location to the next.
