Continuing has one of three possible defining characteristics. You can continue by maintaining an activity(s) and/or event(s) for an indefinite time, repeat a subset(s) which has been delayed, and do the next required subset(s).
Continue playing, eating, working, driving, traveling, flying, screaming, etc. is essentially continue followed by a verb participle. You can also say continue to play, to eat, to work, etc.
