Confidential: adj. secret and/or strictly private
If you want to keep something totally confidential then hide it and tell no one. The probability of your confidentiality being revealed increases proportional to the number of humans that know about it. The more humans you tell the greater is the probability that your secret will be revealed.
In the real world confidential information is usually shared with a trusted human whom you feel will not betray you under any circumstances. Confidentiality is usually relatively safe with a spouse or a very close friend but tell any other humans your secret and it is just a question of time before it leaks out or even becomes public knowledge.
Innovative businesses frequently have confidential information which they don’t want the public to know about or other competitors so there is considerable effort made in limiting the research and manufacturing facilities to trusted authorized personnel only.
