Bug: v. (slang) to willfully steal privacy
When you bug a residence or building then you are effectively stealing the privacy of the occupants. For effective law enforcement this is sometimes necessary but officers should have permission or a warrant to do so issued by a legal judge.
Bugging can be very sophisticated and done from an external location with laser beams interpreting window pane vibrations and knowing what is being said in the residence or building so bugging does not necessarily mean that an actual physical device is being planted in the premises illegally.
Who has this sophisticated equipment? Why law enforcement and wealthy private individuals who can afford the technology. If you really want to keep something private then make yourself an isolation chamber Faraday pail with acoustic sound absorption and no electronics entering and leaving the chamber. Anything less and you are vulnerable to covert spying by powerful humans.
