Anthropomorphism: n. giving human characteristics and/or abilities to a (deity(s) and/or animal(s)) and/or object(s)

Giving human characteristics to a subset other than a human is called anthropomorphism and its application to real life historically has resulted in much mythology and supernatural thinking. Humans are very similar to animals and using human behavioral characteristics to describe their behavior is not really erroneous because our brains function in very similar ways, especially in pack animals.
