Shrimp, salmon, cod, and tuna are four species which are being overeaten and overfished and it is time that we bought other kinds of fish with our money and promoted variety in our diets and the aquatic ecosystem.
Huge nondiscriminating fish nets, no safety net 100% protected areas from any fishing, dead zones from agricultural runoff, damning of spawning areas, and no limitation to quantity of seasonal catches is devastating the fish population for future generations.
Aquaculture is a partial solution but eating mussels and sea kelp can go a long way in cleaning up the water and providing good nutrition also. Here is an excellent ted.com talk on the problem with potentially optimistic solutions in the long duration.
