Clue: n. a subset(s) potentially useful in solving a problem(s) and/or identifying a set(s)

A clue in a mystery, crime, puzzle, or unidentified event is a bit of information used alone or with other clues to solve a mystery, crime, puzzle, or unknown event or to infer some fact and/or fiction from a clue(s).  Much experience and/or knowledge is often needed to extrapolate valid information from clues only and most extrapolations are merely statistical assumptions or guesses which are not frequently that accurate in real life.

Circumstantial evidence is sometimes presented as a clue(s) or proof of a crime when in reality there is only a statistical probability that the evidence is really valid and not just an exercise in guilt by association.
