Mar: v. to decrease the optimal value of a subset(s) to a small degree
When you mar a beautiful paint job or mar an excellent human reputation then you are decreasing its value slightly and the result is something close to perfection but not perfection itself. You can mar the beauty and/or perfection of a subset(s) but that definitely does not mean that you totally destroy, spoil, or ruin it beyond recognition.
