THE TRUTH ABOUT REQUESTING+

request_sign2

Request: v. to communicate a desire for a human(s) to do a subset(s)

Politely asking someone to do something is a request and implied in the desire is your right to refuse the request politely. Asking to take part in a survey, asking for a favor, and asking for help are usually requests which you may fulfill or deny depending on the circumstances.

Excuses or reasons for not fulfilling a request may be many and varied. You may not have the time, you may be busy, it might be an inconvenience to you, or it might simply be something which you don’t feel like doing. All these are valid reasons for not fulfilling a request.

If done properly a human should not be offended or hurt by refusing a request. Sometimes just saying “no thanks” or “no sorry” is enough to turn down a request to do something politely.

There are humans who will take advantage of your good nature and start with little requests which soon build into major ones which can become quite a burden on your time and energy. Most humans don’t like to say no but no is frequently the best solution to someone trying to take advantage of you with too many unnecessary or burdensome requests.

A suggestion may be a veiled request.  The suggestion “Let’s play ball” may actually mean “Please play ball with me” which is really a request. Suggestions are usually easier to turn down than requests and there is a smaller probability that you will offend or hurt someone’s feelings if you say no.

Recommendations can also be veiled requests. The recommendation “I think it is a good time to play ball” may actually mean “Please play ball with me now” which is a request. Recommendations are also easier to turn down than requests and there is less likelihood that you will offend or hurt someone’s feelings if you say no.

Recommendations, suggestions, requests, and other forms of expression all reflect human desires and it requires much communication or social skill to go against those basic desires and say no to them politely so that you don’t offend or hurt someone’s feelings.

THE TRUTH ABOUT REQUESTS***

request_021

Request: v. to communicate a desire for a human(s) to do a subset(s)

When you ask someone to do something it is a request and it can be done politely or it can even be a formal communication in writing asking you to do something. Requests are not commands and you usually have the option of refusing the request.

Polite refusal is frequently necessary to avoid hurt feelings such as a request to attend a wedding which is refused politely due to some more pressing commitment. Refusing a request is properly done by coming up with a realistic or believable excuse or just saying- “Sorry, I can’t do it.”
