THE UPDATED TRUTH ABOUT MAZLOW’S HEIRARCHY OF NEEDS!!!

I agree that the most basic of human needs are physiological and can be stated as the need for food, water, warmth, movement, and sleep. Many of us are motivated to satisfy these basic needs with the possible exception of severe drug addicts and the mentally ill who may disregard some of these basic needs at their own peril.

I prefer to classify other needs as motivating DESIRES for many but not for all. The supposed need for security or safety motivates many but there are the gamblers, the risk takers, thrill seekers, pleasure seekers, and entrepreneurs for whom too much security is not exciting enough and does not offer enough of a reward for living. Risk takers often prefer an adrenalin rush or the hope of making a great profit to too long a duration of a secure but relatively boring existence. Hedonistic promiscuous males and those involved in extreme sports are examples of risk taking deviance.

Many desire intimate or close relationships but many also fail at true intimacy which requires integrity, dependability, good communication skills, financial responsibility, and competence. Many more probably desire but not that many know how to develop trusting enduring relationships with the same or opposite sex. In a modern age of accepted promiscuity and some immorality intimate committed relationships are fast becoming an endangered species.

The desire to be praised, respected, and loved or a basic desire to have one’s ego lifted can almost be considered to be a basic need and source of motivation for many. Unfortunately many hope to get their self-esteem boosted by external things like just looking good, wearing the right clothes, having a nice car or furniture, having an interesting hobby, and having many acquaintances since many do not have such fulfilling good paying jobs or careers which they can feel proud about.

The desire to be respected and admired is fulfilled by being in a leadership position or having a reputable good paying career which you enjoy or can be creative in. Celebrities are often admired but not always respected since few of them have the morality and integrity to survive the temptations and drawbacks of celebrity status in the long duration.

Cognitive and aesthetic desires or the desire to think and search for beauty are relatively uncommon desires and motivates very few common men and women who have a tendency to judge based on past experience and not think and a tendency to accept authority figure judgments of what is beautiful.

Transcendence is defined as existence beyond the normal or physical level and we enter the badly defined area of spiritual experiences with no logical connection to reality other than brain activity of some kind which not that many desire to dwell in for very long.

True needs are mostly physiological and ego boosting. The rest of Mazlow’s needs are just desires that many have which motivate their lives and the order of priority varies in many individuals. There is no structural pyramid of needs for all humans.

There are those severely addicted to alcohol, drugs, gambling, pornography, sex, overeating, shopping, etc. These severe addictions can become true personal needs with priority number one which make Mazlow’s pyramid of needs crumble to dust because even basic physiological needs are no longer fully met in some extreme addiction cases, especially in some drug addictions.

The basic error in Mazlow’s theory is that he has failed to accurately differentiate between a human need and a human desire. A human need is a desire for a subset(s) which is frequently essential. A need then is usually just an essential desire.

Desire: v. to mentally sense a need to achieve a goal(s) and frequently making that future achievement more probable and it originates in the survival instinct

Need: v. to desire a subset(s) which is frequently essential

Finally what many humans basically want or desire is to be happy and the type of goals which you strive to achieve will either increase your happiness in the short and/or long duration or increase your misery in the short and/or long duration.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PETULANCE+

maxresdefault

Petulance: n. showing an attitude of anger and annoyance when one doesn’t get what one wants and/or desires and is frequently considered a childish behavior

Petulant young offspring readily show their anger and annoyance when they don’t get what they want and sometimes add much moaning and groaning. Adults are more reserved and emotionally hide their anger and annoyance to some extent and aren’t as demonstrative as young offspring are. Adults are seldom described as being petulant but young offspring are.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELFLESSNESS+

selflessness

Selflessness: n. concerned more with the needs and wants of others than with one’s own desires and needs

Extreme altruists are portrayed as selfless individuals mostly interested in fulfilling the needs and wants of others and not so much in fulfilling their own personal needs and wants. Most extremes have bad consequences and in totally dedicating yourself to others you fail to live a personally fulfilling life and experiencing all the things which normal humans can experience.

Mother Teresa became famous for her extreme altruism but she is not a perfect example of a good balanced human being since if everyone followed her footsteps then there would be no one left to do the productive work which a prosperous reciprocating society needs.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELFKNOWLEDGE+

“Self-knowledge-and-self-improvement-are-very-difficult-for-most-people.-It-usually-needs-great-courage-and-long-struggle.”-Abraham-Maslow-psychology-quotes

Selfknowledge: n. knowing what ones goals are and why you have them and knowing how your emotions and desires affect your thinking and/or behavior

Most of us have some selfknowledge but not complete selfknowledge because most are living habitual impulsive lives and not so many stop and think about and pursue  long term personal goals.

Not everyone is consciously aware of their desires and emotions and how they affect their thinking and daily behaviors. Most of us lead relatively habitual impulsive lives and seldom take time out to truly think about why and whether we should be thinking and doing the things which we think and do on a daily basis. Who am I and what should I really be like in the future are questions which are often not seriously thought about.

“Know thyself” should be more important than it is for the common human living a largely delusional habitual impulsive life in a world filled with myths and deceptions.

THE TRUTH ABOUT INFLUENCE+

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Influence: v. to control and/or affect a subset(s) intentionally and sometimes unintentionally with a lasting effect(s) and not always with a commanding action(s) only and frequently by being an authority and/or by being respected for ((achievement and/or competence) and/or expertise) and/or by merely existing in our lives and/or by being desired

We are influenced by humans and lifeforms, objects, and events and the influence sometimes continues for a lifetime or any duration in between.

We have all tried to influence our offspring, significant other, spouse, friends, and other humans with our opinions, beliefs, expertise, demands, and material possessions to feel good about ourselves or to try and derive some benefit from the interaction.

Despite our best attempts at persuasion an offspring or other human just does not obey us or take our advice and maybe even does the opposite of what we would like them to do.

In order to influence someone you need to be in an authoritative position or respected for your expertise in some field to have maximum impact on the one whom you are trying to influence. The more humans trust, respect, and maybe even admire you, the more influence you will have on their lives.

Similarly the humans who influence us the most are the ones who are in positions of authority over us or are humans closest to us whom we respect and maybe even admire. Politicians, bosses, celebrities, offspring, significant other, spouse, and close friends can also influence our lives and make us do things and think thoughts which can change our lives for better or worse.

Sometimes we have no power over who influences our lives but the smartest thing to do is to try and surround ourselves with as many good humans as possible so that most of the influence is good and not bad.

Influencing is not always a conscious activity which we are aware of. The media, advertising, and humans whom we would not like to be influenced by may actually influence us by their mere dominant existence in our lives. There is good and bad in the world and unfortunately the bad can also subconsciously influence our lives and make it worse than we would like it to be or given enough time can even change our opinions and sometimes beliefs.

Sometimes we make a mistake trying to influence someone a certain way and the influence may actually be unintentional which can have unintended good or bad consequences. We may ask our offspring to obey us but our personal behavior may be much different and influence them in an unwanted way. Do as I say and not do as I do leads to much unintentional influencing because actions speak louder than words.

You can also influence humans transiently with deceptions, untruths, and ego inflation but once your deceptions, untruths, and insincere praise becomes known your power to influence will wane and even come to an end and more importantly you will lose your good trusted reputation.

Influenceun: n. unintentional influence

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELFMOTIVATION***

97922-o

Selfmotivation: n. motivated by one’s (desire(s) and/or emotion(s)) and/or (need(s) and/or belief(s)) and/or past experience(s) which activate and/or prevent one’s behavior(s) and/or the force(s) and brain which activates you to pursue an old and/or new goal(s)

Selfmotivation is the result of your desires, emotions, needs, beliefs, and past experiences which all relatively impulsively guide you into doing a behavior or not doing it. Selfmotivation is also the force and brain which activates you to achieve your old and/or new goal(s).

Selfmotivation is unique in every individual because each one has differences in the kind and intensity of the desires, emotions, needs, beliefs, and past experiences. Most humans share common desires, emotions, needs, beliefs, and least of all past experiences so there is much variation from one to another human and there are relatively large differences in the emotional attachment to the common desires, needs, beliefs, and past experiences.

External motivating factors trigger many of our behaviors but individual reactions to these external motivators differ widely from person to person in many cases.

Quite a few, especially the poor and some very rich, are motivated by the lottery and gambling in general. Others aware of the odds against winning have no interest at all in gambling and are not motivated.

We are all motivated to eat but what we eat varies widely from one to another person. Most of us are motivated to work but the kind of job that we work in varies widely and shapes our view of the world to a large extent.

How we behave is determined by a relatively complex mix of external and internal motivators which will never be subject to mathematical formulation because the badly defined variables are simply too great in number and vagueness to be codified mathematically. Statistical norms and big data can be studied extensively in an attempt to predict human behavior or find out what motivates a human but there will never be 100% accuracy in the predictions or a certainty of what a human will do next even when confronted with the same stimuli.

Media brainwashing, indoctrination, advertising, and education is an attempt to control selfmotivation and it works in a general sense to tame the human beast and keep society interacting relatively orderly and peaceably.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELFCONTROL***

self-control-med

Selfcontrol: n. mental control of one’s own (desires and/or emotions) and/or behaviors

Most of us react impulsively much of the time and we have some conscious control over our behaviors, less control over our emotions, and even less control over our desires.

Psychologists may object to my definition because there has been a historical artificial separation of mind and body or desires and emotions versus behaviors. The fact is that you can have mental control over all three and an artificial separation of mind and body behaviors is not factually correct because body behaviors include the functioning of the mind!!!!!! Trash all those historical writings which assume a mind vs. body philosophy!

Someone with much selfcontrol is less impulsive than the average human and even occasionally takes some time out to think before they react to circumstances.

Young offspring are very impulsive and will do many things which adults have learned not to do for safety or social reasons. Offspring tend to be more reckless and honest and will blurt out comments about appearance and behavior which may seem a little offensive to some adults. That is an ugly dress, you are fat, or you’re mean are sometimes honest remarks made by offspring which offend adult sensibilities.

If you are unhappy about your lifestyle chances are that you will make rather few changes unless there is a crisis because you are in a relatively satisfying rut always taking the easy way out without much selfdiscipline or the selfcontrol needed to make changes and do something about your bad circumstances.

If your behavior is largely influenced by the behavior of others, if you are not conscious of your good or bad habits, if you frequently get angry and get into arguments, then chances are great that you also have little selfcontrol over your own life.

If you want more selfcontrol in your life then you have to take some time out to meditate and think about how your life is progressing and what if anything can be done to improve upon it. Too many are tired of trying to improve their lives because they have not met with much success but too much failure and decide to accept their fate or circumstances.

If you are not learning any new useful skills or new useful knowledge and feel that you know enough about the world to make it through another day then the probability is great that you will never develop enough selfcontrol to really thrive and not just exist.

Are you conscious of or have you thought about or analyzed almost all your desires, emotions, and behaviors? If not then the probability is great that you have little if any personal control over them.

THE TRUTH ABOUT RESISTANCE***

support-resistance

Resistance: n. opposing a (force(s) and/or desire(s)) and/or subset(s)

If you oppose force, a desire or temptation, a command, or a concept or belief then you are offering resistance.

Opposing force may lead to fighting and opposing a desire to take drugs may lead to withdrawal symptoms and both are examples of resistance. You can also oppose a command, a concept, or a belief which can lead to punishment, disagreement, or an argument.

In an ideal world there should be no resistance to what you want to do but in the real world friction, conflict, competition, and habits exist to frequently prevent you from reaching any goal or goals which you may have.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ABUNDANCE***

abundance-3

Abundance: n. having more than an adequate quantity of a subset(s) possessed and/or needed and/or desired

Wealthy nations are living in an age of seeming abundance. There is more cheap energy, cheap food, cheap goods, and cheap entertainment than we can consume and this has led to many profligate irresponsible lifestyles. There are LESS quality humans, quality relationships, quality food, quality goods, quality entertainment, quality government, and quality wilderness.

Abundance has its costs and quality is what suffers. Technology when properly applied is an antidote to bad quality but unfortunately it is also being used to promote the abundance of cheap subsets which are destroying the biodiversity of the food supply and wilderness and endangering the quality of life for future generations.

A voracious largely mindless impulsive short duration consumption of goods and services is creating too many “live for today” inefficient lifestyles which nature abhors and is already punishing humans with bad health, dysfunctional relationships, and bad addictive lifestyles.

Increasing irresponsible financial and immoral individual behavior is creating government dependency and an irresponsible financially and morally incompetent inefficient government with a leadership which no longer knows how to govern justly.

A government which encourages and rewards growing healthy organic food by not taxing it, which promotes an updated secular moral code for elementary students, which promotes thrifty personal financial behavior which includes budgeting for emergencies and old age is what is needed. A government which operates with updated just taxation and laws, has financial reserves for fiscal emergencies which does not include the counterfeiting of money as needed, and balances the national budget on a yearly basis is what is sorely needed.

Profligacy or living abundantly beyond your means is not easy to change overnight but managing abundance responsibly is something which must be done for the long duration health of humans and the healthy economy of the nation and world.

Finally there is an abundance of money not linked to tangible assests in the hands of wealthy individuals and there is so much of it that they don’t know how to invest it wisely for the long duration because there is such an emphasis on short duration profit. This oversupply of money and not enough smarts to invest it wisely for the long duration is what is polluting the world, polluting relationships, and destroying wilderness and biodiversity of the food supply upon which civilization’s ultimate survival depends!!!!!!

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELFMOTIVATION***

unnamed

Selfmotivation: n. motivated by one’s desire(s) and/or need(s) and/or belief(s) and/or past experiences which activate and/or prevent one’s behavior(s)

Many of us wrongly assume that all motivation is external from other humans and events which happen in our lives. The truth is that there is a complex interaction between external motivators and internal motivators which result in the behavior which we do.

The internal motivators are what is called selfmotivation and it is the desires, needs, beliefs, past experiences, and reactions to external factors which we personally possess. The internal motivation can either stimulate us to enthusiastically pursue a goal(s) or to cautiously pursue that goal(s) or to not pursue that goal(s) all mediated by what we personally largely impulsively think in our minds.

Before we do something everything in effect passes through our personal filter of desires, needs, beliefs, and past experiences which largely determines how we react to external stimuli.

If the world does not motivate you to become a better human then don’t entirely blame the world but put most of the blame on yourself and your absence of proper selfmotivation. Ultimately you have to motivate yourself to do important things in your life and that means taking time out to think about your progress throughout life and readjusting your goals accordingly.

You must push yourself or selfmotivate yourself to do important things in your life. Try to make good judgments along the way and do the right things and not the wrong things with your life.

If you are unhappy with your lifestyle then learn new useful skills and knowledge, make some new goals, associate with better humans, exclude or reduce the bad habits in your life, and push yourself with one or more small steps which will hopefully lead to a happier future. Motivate yourself to do something better with your life and chances are that it will be much happier in the long duration.

The enemy of proper selfmotivation is the deluge of external propaganda which brainwashes you with lies, deceptions, and bad advice into leading the wrong kind of life impulsively so you are not entirely to blame if your life seems purposeless, unsatisfying, and unrewarding.

If you want to seriously exclude lies, deceptions, and bad advice from your life then you can start by reading some of my evergreen truth blogs which are the antidote to untrue political, economic, social, and even scientific propaganda which has brainwashed you and most of the world.

The truth is not always pleasant to know and frequently selfdeceptions or comforting lies are more soothing to live with. It is lies which we have lived with during our entire life to date and it is subjective lies which we believe to be the truth. Changing our long held objectively untrue beliefs is very hard to do without overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Another reason that we don’t change our untrue beliefs is that there is frequently some truth in them and they are not total untruths. There is such a thing as being partially true and partially untrue and it is the partial truth which we frequently hold on for dear life. Most of us believe that something is either totally true or totally untrue without shades of grey or uncertainty.

You can thank our archaic language for this unfortunate irrational logic that everything must be either black or white, yes or no, true or untrue, antonym or synonym, and always or never. We are all guilty of falling into the logical trap that one or a few examples is evidence enough that what we believe is always true. The truth is that many more examples can show that what you believe is only true in certain circumstances or at certain times. Most humans don’t have an analytical mentality which thinks in terms of sometimes true and sometimes untrue.

Moral truth should not be relativistic most of the time but many of our opinions and beliefs about human nature and reality are relativistic and not true all the time or not true in all circumstances. Many of our beliefs are frequently, sometimes, or infrequently true and not true all the time or under all circumstances.

Most of us are committed to our physical survival as well as the survival of our strong beliefs even though the lifelong beliefs are sometimes very wrong and untrue either totally or partially.

Continue to live with your old desires, needs,  beliefs, and untruths OR reeducate yourself and start to realistically think about and make new adjustments to your desires, needs, and beliefs and view the world and your place in it slightly or radically differently. The choice is up to you!!!!!!

THE TRUTH ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT

disappointment

Disappointment: n. sensing low to medium intensity badness after failing to achieve your (needs and/or hopes) and/or (desires and/or expectations) and/or goal(s)

Fail to get a date, fail to get a job, not enough money for a new car, don’t receive a promise, don’t ace an easy test, don’t do a task on time, and a hundred and one other relatively small failures in life can be very disappointing and even frustrating if you are repeatedly disappointed.

You can frequently be a disappointment to yourself but other humans can also disappoint you if they make promises and don’t keep them and ruin your expectations.

Some disappointments are so great that they can make you angry at yourself or others. A low to medium intensity unpleasant feeling which frequently accompanies a disappointment may become very intense and should be considered awful, a disaster, or tragedy in your life and not just a medium intensity disappointment.

There really isn’t a word for very intense disappointment and there should be.

Disappointang: n. very intense disappointment frequently existing with anger
