Adjudicate: v. to make a formal judgement on a subset(s) which is frequently (a disputed matter and/or a problem needing a solution) and/or a competition with presented evidence
When a court of law judge makes a judgment on a disputed matter that is called adjudication. Actually even authorities making formal decisions about a competition or a problem which arises between disputants can also be considered adjudication.
Adjudication is just a fancy word for formally judging a dispute through the court system. Sometimes only a judge gets primarily involved, mostly only lawyers and a judge(s) gets involved, and sometimes you have to appear personally before a judge or in court to officially settle the dispute with a judgment which hopefully is just and satisfies both prosecutor(s) and defendant(s).
