WHAT DOES RESILIENCE MEAN AND HOW CAN YOU BECOME MORE RESILIENT???

Resilience: n. having an ability to recover relatively quickly from difficult personal consequences

An appropriate personal attitude, an ability to overcome personal mistakes and problems, and resourcefulness in getting help from researched useful knowledge and assistance from others is basically what creates a resilient human who can relatively quickly recover from difficult personal consequences.

A basically optimistic attitude, selfcontrol, selfesteem, and confidence, accepting and adjusting to one’s weaknesses and mostly using one’s strengths, a recognition or selfawareness of one’s and other’s emotional states all constitute an appropriate personal attitude.

An ability to set and choose to pursue realistic goals, having realistic expectations, an ability to gather relevant information or selfeducate, avoiding some serious problems with forethought and advance planning, a financial reserve or insurance for emergencies, and an ability to discuss and think about problems rather than argue about them will all help in learning from your mistakes and help problem solving.

Finally knowing how to selfeducate or use search engines to get relevant information and knowing what humans to consult or get help from on a relevant topic or situation will usually provide the knowledge and assistance necessary to get one out of bad circumstances in a reasonable period of time.

Of course you can ask- how do you develop selfcontrol and problem solving abilities? The answer is selfeducation and/or experience in disciplining oneself and knowledge about problem solving techniques or experience in solving problems. Resilience is not something that we are born with but is something which we usually acquire through the experience of confronting problems and solving them and making mistakes and then correcting them or learning from them so that the same mistakes are not repeated again in the future.

You can live and learn mostly through experience but the smarter ones amongst us learn from the historical experience of others who have confronted similar problems in their lives and solved them or have advice on how to avoid similar problems in the first place. Yes, it greatly helps if you have resilient role models to learn from.

Many humans are not very resilient and get out of their problematic circumstances sooner or often later, but a resilient human will get out of a bad circumstance relatively quickly.

THE TRUTH ABOUT RELIVING+

i_love_reliving_the_past_sticker-r244e6f5cb7f44e61bc1186c3fe7fa26a_v9wf3_8byvr_324

Relive: v. to physically and/or mentally repeat a past experience(s)

To relive an exciting experience is very tempting. In old age when physically reliving a past pleasant experience is no longer possible then many of us chose to relive the pleasant experience mentally.

Frequently humans suffering from current hardship mentally relive the past or the good old days and frequently yearn to return to some semblance of that experienced happiness.

Psychologically it is far healthier to look forward to the future and the good experiences which it can bring rather than dwelling in the past which is history and will never change or come back in its original form.

Reliving past experiences can sometimes act as a bonding agent for married couples whose loving relationship may be waning. Mentally resharing the good old times when times aren’t that good any more sometimes helps both in a relationship going when there is great current hardship to be overcome. Sometimes physically resharing a past experience heightens the bonding felt for one another with sayings such as-“Do you remember the great time we had here when we were younger?”

Remembering a nice past can be pleasant as long as you don’t spend too much time reliving what will probably never be again. Move forward and do what you still can do.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MENTORING+

Mentoring-Concept-487498941

Mentor: v. to advise and teach for a relatively long duration by one who is frequently experienced and respected and trusted and older

Mentoring is mostly giving advice with some teaching and could be considered to be being a role model who is teaching you how to follow in his or her footsteps. In ancient Greece relatively old and wise mentors not only gave professional advice but even advised you on how to live a moral and social life.

Today most mentors mentor youngsters or are high ranked professionals who take a younger human under their supervision to teach them the basics of how to succeed in a given profession. Actually anyone whom you respect and trust and who is experienced at something or many things can be your mentor. Mentoring can be short lived but some mentoring lasts for a long duration and the mentoring can be done by someone whose knowledge is so extensive that you may go to them for advice as long as they are alive.

Mentoring is a general inclusive category and usually voluntary but some are paid for the mentoring subsets and it is usually considered coaching, counseling, teaching, supervising, or training. A general mentor usually does a little of every subset mentioned to some extent.

INTERVIEW PRINCIPLES AND QUESTIONS FOR MANAGERS, TECHNICAL EXPERTS, AND GRADUATES WITH NO EXPERIENCE

interview_crop380w

Experience in the field is the most important consideration when hiring. Managers definitely need human communication skills along with some technical expertise.

Technical experts need a proven record of achievement and may lack managerial skills but should be able to communicate well. Graduates usually have book learning only and are unproven managers and technical experts who need a different set of interview questions.

There is also a big difference in hiring the brightest and best or just an adequate worker or manager who will do the job well but may not have ambitions to climb the ladder of success any higher. There is basically the adequate worker for the job and a rather ambitious one who wants to become almost indispensable to the organization in a position of leadership.

An experienced good leader will have risen up the scale of leadership in an organization and have taken on greater and greater responsibility or a greater number of workers under him or her with the passage of time.

Another sign of a good leader is one who changed organizations and each time landed a managerial job with more responsibility or more workers under him or her. A proven track record of increased leadership responsibility is a good sign that he or she will also try to increase responsibility in your organization too.

During the interview you will usually get a sense of how good a conversationalist the potential leader is. You will find out if the answers are largely impulsive or whether they think a little before answering some of the questions. You will find out if they are verbose or short and sweet and to the point.

Excessive verbosity, evasive answers, impulsive answers without slight pause on occasion, and incomplete answers may be a sign of flawed communication skills. Leaders need a good memory for details and names and any follow up questions which reveal this ability are good questions.

An experienced technical expert will show his or her prowess in the field of expertise by the sheer number of projects completed successfully during tenure in the organization. The more projects that he or she has completed is a sign of technical expertise. Leadership ability is not as critical if you are looking for a candidate to do a specialty job extremely well.

A leader with many jobs at the same level of leadership responsibility may be a sign of incompetent leadership and a technical expert with many jobs with similar challenges may also be a sign of mediocre expertise and one not capable of taking on new challenges in his or her field of expertise.

For a graduate seeking a managerial position in a company his or her social interests in high school and college are usually a good indication of leadership potential. If he or she was the president or leader of more than one club or organization in school then chances are their social skills are probably good, especially if they come from a family of three offspring or more.

If the graduate is interested in many things outside of work or has many hobbies then chances are they will be interesting conversationalists and frequently have something in common with the workers working under them.

Grades are important indicators for mental ability but the number of close friends and good family life of parents with relatively many friends is also a good indicator of social ability. Privacy is still important but if you can gain access to Facebook communications then this will reveal the number and types of friends that the prospective employee has and the style in which the communication occurs.

Graduates with technical expertise are preferred if they come from a technical college or university with a good technical staff. Computer programming or computer science along with an engineering degree are highly desirable.

Leadership questions where human skills or emotional intelligence and strategic planning is primary:

What are your reasons for changing jobs?

What were your biggest challenges and how did you handle them?

What major areas do you need improvement in and what are you doing about it?

What is your biggest weakness and how do you compensate for it?

What were some of your most challenging employee problems and how did your handle or resolve them?

What motivation tools do you use?

How do you encourage feedback from your employees?

What were some of the reasons you fired employees and how did you try to resolve the problem first before firing?

When you hire someone what questions do you ask?

What were some of your best and worst employees and why?

Have you had to tolerate lying, petty theft, or tardiness and absenteeism in an employee?

How do you handle an employee who is not a good team player but seems competent in other ways?

What were some intuitions that you had about employees which turned out to be true?

What percentage of your workers did you know on a first name basis?

How do you relax during and after work?

What would you like to ask me about your job?

You can end the interview with the question-Why should I hire you?

Technical questions are important during a technical interview but you also need someone who updates knowledge based on new developments in the field of expertise and is an efficient worker.

What are your reasons for changing jobs?

What was the project which was the lengthiest and was the most challenging and why?

Have you largely worked on your own or mostly with a team?

How do you keep updated in your field of expertise?

About what percentage of your projects took longer than expected?

What percentage of your new learning is on the job and at home?

How frequently have you had to take work home or stayed late on the job to complete a project?

What are your greatest weaknesses and what are you doing about them?

What tasks do you enjoy the most and which ones the least?

Ask some random technical questions which are absolutely needed for the job being hired for.

You can end the interview with- Why should I hire you?

Questions for graduates without proven experience are very open ended and should focus on determining the drive and ambition of the potential employee for a leadership position and test a memory for names and details. For a technical position focus on questioning for the technical expertise of a technical specialist.

Where do you see yourself 5 or 10 years from now?

What were your favorite subjects in school?

What subjects or courses do you think will be more useful in this job?

What are the characteristics of a good leader or manager?

What other companies did you apply to?

What made you choose this company?

Why should I hire you?

THE TRUTH ABOUT NAIVETE***

2745886866_1

Naivete: n. a relatively small quantity of real experience and/or knowledge with innocent simplicity and/or honesty which makes one seem foolish

Offspring can be considered to be naïve because they lack worldly experience and are frequently very honest and don’t hide their feelings and opinions the way that many adults do.

A naïve adult is really one who has been largely isolated from society and still reacts with honest spontaneity which seems foolish to a hardened adult who has been taught to be deceptive under many social circumstances to avoid social embarrassment.

A naïve adult will frequently criticize a bad gift, tell you honestly that your perfume stinks, say your excess jewelry is gaudy, say they don’t like your pretentious spouse, say that your offspring are brats if they misbehave, and say that you are fat if you are overweight. Naïve adults frequently don’t understand that we all have our egos and don’t want them to be hurt. Many naïve adults are more trusting then they should be in a world filled with social  and economic predators.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CONTENTMENT***

contentment

Contentment: n. experiencing a relatively long duration of satisfaction and/or happiness

When someone says that they are leading a content life then that means that they are leading a generally satisfying and/or happy life.

Yes, no one can be content all the time so there are periods of dissatisfaction and unhappiness but they are generally rather infrequent and not considered as drawbacks to a mostly content life.

Contentment last a relatively long time and it is only temporarily interrupted with some unsatisfying and unhappy moments. If you are content with your marriage then that means that you are generally satisfied and/or happy with it.

If you are satisfied and/or happy for an hour or two then you have had a period of contentment no matter how unsatisfying and unhappy your life may be the rest of the time.

You can be content with a relatively inactive life or be content with a rather dynamic and interesting life. Contentment usually means that your basic needs are fulfilled and what you do beyond these basic needs is your responsibility or your life to lead.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PRACTICE***

happy-new-year-001

Practice: v. to repeat a behavior(s) and/or skill(s) and/or knowledge and/or experience to get competency and/or expertise

You have probably heard the phrase that “practice makes perfect” and it is frequently true that with enough repetition you can learn most skills and knowledge necessary for existence. The reality is that “practice frequently makes better” but not perfect since consistent perfection is not possible by any human but only robots.

What most don’t realize is that because of repetition or practice we also have developed good and bad habits which are not easy to change because they have become largely impulsive behaviors or the things which we frequently do and don’t do.

Habits are the result of what we have practiced in the past and if you don’t like some of your habits then you can blame the past. Then make a conscious decision to do something about it or you will have to blame yourself for inaction or not trying to improve upon the past.

Some are born with exceptional physical and/or mental ability and don’t need to practice that much to learn a new skill or knowledge. It is frustrating for many average humans to have to compete with humans that have inborn talent and it seems that no matter how much we repeat or practice something we are never really good enough to become outstanding performers in a consistent way.

It is a smart human who realizes that there is a limit to how much you can practice trying to achieve the impossible. If you have to practice four times as much as the average human to reach a goal(s) then it is time to ask yourself-Is it worth the extra time that I am putting in to achieve something which takes others almost no time at all?

Most of us are born with some natural ability in something and it is a smart human who works on improving their strengths and doesn’t work so hard on trying to improve their weaknesses. Practice and improve what you are good at and don’t practice something which you are not good at that much.

Two valuable questions to ask are-What should I practice? and Why should I practice? If you are practicing without a goal(s) in mind then your should definitely reassess the situation.

THE TRUTH ABOUT NOSTALGIA

nostalgia-logo-only-sm

Nostalgia: n. unhappy and yearning for an experienced subset(s)

Old humans are noted for their nostalgia or wanting to relive moments in their youth and feeling rather unhappy that they are not still young. Most adults are not that nostalgic and don’t yearn to relive the past but frequently have current concerns and remain focused in the present and not the distant past.

You may also become somewhat nostalgic in old age so make sure that your current lives are filled with enough happy and memorable moments to make nostalgia worthwhile when you share it with others in your retirement years.

THE TRUTH ABOUT LEARNING

dreamstime_xl_27338322

Learn: v. to acquire (knowledge and/or skills) and/or (behaviors and/or experiences)

Learning can actually be enjoyable for those with very good memories and some talent for the physical and/or mental skills necessary to perform school tasks successfully.

Unfortunately most of us have average memories and little if any talent and don’t put in the extra time and effort to learn what we think is important or what really interests us. We trust what others teach us to learn which is what they say is important but quite a large quantity of it is not important and rather useless information.

Most common education is not very useful and is taught in a mediocre uninspiring way so for many learning is a boring seemingly purposeless activity. Liberal arts is going to be increasingly job poor in the 21st technological century and the huge quantity of largely useless liberal arts education should be greatly decreased.

The most effective learning is experience learning where you actively participate in an audio visual way and retain about 70% of the information after two week’s time. This is why individualized interactive audio visual computer education is an improvement over passive classroom learning where you seldom aurally interact with the subject matter and the instruction is not adjusted to your individual learning speed and background of knowledge.

Learning in an explorative active style is the best form of learning with hands on physical objects found in the environment. My recommendation is to have mini science labs in elementary school where students learn the basics of Archimedes principle for floating objects by building little boats of all shapes and sizes out of aluminum foil and putting in objects and/or liquids which make the boats sink or swim.

Exposing young impressionable minds to levers, pulleys, incline planes, pipes, thermometers, magnets, geometrical shapes, scales, springs, weights, tape measures, plastic tools, microscopes, electric motors, calculators, laptops, and safe chemical reactions would also be a good idea to create an interest in the real physical world around them and introduce them to the concept of quantifying objects numerically and not just drawing them or talking about them.

Many graduating adults can’t even budget their money and this can be taught with a calculator in elementary school so the students can teach their parents to be financially responsible.

Artwork such as drawing and painting just exposes young minds to crayon, pencil, colors, and paint with little utilitarian value and most wind up just wasting time randomly creating lines and shapes and colors with minimal precision.

The age of irrational, mindless, verbose, trivial, non utilitarian education should rapidly come to an end if future humanity is to improve and not repeat historical mistakes as much.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PROBLEM SOLVING

steps-to-problem-solve

You can solve some problems by letting others solve them, you can solve some problems with the help of others, you can solve the problem yourself, or you can ignore a problem and hope that it goes away on its own.

If you are a scientist then solving a problem may be very complex. You will have to analyze a situation, gather data by experimentation, and maybe come up with a verifiable hypothesis which explains accurately what is going on. You will effectively be using the scientific method with appropriate analyzing and synthesizing.

If you have a common problem then gathering all the information needed to solve it is important. Once you gather the information you can then use your previous knowledge or expertise to organize the information logically and solve the problem using known techniques.

Come up with more than one way of solving the problem if possible and call it plan A, B, C, etc. If one approach to solving a problem doesn’t work then you should be ready to use plan B or C to try and solve it.

Most problems have a solution and the key to solving them is prior experience with similar problems and understanding that sometimes there is frequently more than one way of finding a solution.

If you have the luxury of much time on your hand then you can keep trying to solve a problem in a casual way without much stress but unfortunately most problems need speedy solutions and you will frequently be under stressful time constraints.

Some problems are not as important as other problems and you should learn to prioritize the important problems so that you can spend more time trying to solve them. The little problems may not go away but you can frequently not solve them or ignore them and sometimes they go away on their own with changing circumstances.

Solving problems at home and not on the job require parenting skills and relationship skills which frequently get easier to solve with prior experience. Trial and error is a bad but sometimes necessary way that problems get solved at home when prior expertise or knowledge is inadequate or absent.

Sometimes solving a big problem like poor grades means solving many little problems first. It may mean getting adequate sleep, setting aside dependable time for studying, eliminating distractions during study time, motivating by promising rewards for conscientious studying, and even getting tutoring help during study periods.

Some problems like an overly emotional spouse have no solutions and you may be forced to adapt and live with the problem if divorce is not an option.

16 TRUTHS ABOUT EDUCATION OR KNOWLEDGE

5-startups-transforming-online-education-4483e6d74d

There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live.

The sad fact is that public schools are neither teaching us how to make a good living nor are they teaching us how to live a morally successful life. If you apply moral relationship principles on and off a job then you should have optimal success in life.

There are six honest serving men and women. They can teach you all that you need to know. Their names are-Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How.

If you want to educate yourself on any subject imaginable, find answers to these questions and you will be able to discover and learn the useful knowledge yourself.

A man or woman can learn only two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter humans.

Of course you can also learn by trial and error but this is a very stupid and inefficient way to learn. If you try to associate with smart humans then you will learn much useful information from them.

Practice does not always make perfect.

Practice frequently makes an acceptable performance which is not necessarily perfect. It is frequently a fact that much practicing of a skill must occur before mastery is achieved. This applies to game skills, job skills, and knowledge skills.

Perfection is the domain of robots who can repeat something perfectly every time.  People may try to be perfectionists but very many are not perfect and make many mistakes along the way. Practice does not always make perfect.

Repetition is the best way to learn

This of course is not true if you almost have a photographic memory.

Everyone makes mistakes.

This is true all the time since humans are imperfect creatures and not robots.  What makes for a difference between something good and bad is how many mistakes are made in doing something.  The more mistakes that you make, the worse is your performance at some task.

If you don’t control your mind, someone else will.

This is true in most cases. If you don’t have strong personal beliefs or personal ways of looking at and thinking about events, opinions, facts, and people, you will meet plenty of people who are trying to impose their beliefs and propaganda on you.  Businesses through advertising are always thinking up ways of getting you to buy their product or service. Media commentators and writers would like nothing better than to convince you that their viewpoints are the correct ones to have. Almost everyone would like you to believe what they believe in.

A little general knowledge can go a long way

A little knowledge, especially if it is a true general principle, can be applied over and over again in many areas of life. Be friendly towards people and it will increase the likelihood that they will be friendly towards you.  This is a little knowledge that can go a long way towards improving your relationships with other people throughout a lifetime. Treat others the way that you would wish to be treated is also a little knowledge that is useful throughout a lifetime.

Abstraction is a type of decadence

To the extent that abstraction departs from reality and nature, that is the extent to which it can be considered to be decadent. Nowhere is this more evident than in abstract painting where all natural beauty and reason is absent and all that is left is a gross mutant product or creativity running into a dead end.

Even the best writer has to erase

This just means that even perfectionists make some mistakes.

Experience is the best teacher.

Doing something yourself or physically is frequently a better teacher than learning how to do it in your head. The truth is that the mind and body have to be coordinated to get the best learning results. Learning only through experience can sometimes be a long and arduous process since there might be too much trial and error learning going on. Experience learning can frequently be speeded up and improved with some book or internet learning too.

A little learning can be a dangerous thing.

It is dangerous only if you assume that by acquiring a little knowledge about something you automatically assume that you know all there is about that something. Knowing how to use the accelerator and brakes does not automatically mean that you are a good driver and if you assume that you are, it can be very dangerous.

Elaboration is a form of pollution

Elaboration is an embellishment of the facts which frequently results in rather boring and time consuming rhetoric which can indeed be considered a form of pollution which wastes time, energy, and sometimes money.

Knowledge is power if it has purpose.

Knowledge in the right fields can be powerful and land you a good job. Knowledge in fields such as the arts, philosophy, history and the humanities may leave you with bad job skills that are useful almost nowhere and this can’t be considered to be powerful knowledge.

Knowing yourself lets you understand others to some extent.

This is true because knowing your strengths and weaknesses will help you to identify those same strengths and weaknesses in others. It will not be a complete understanding of others but at least it is a start.

Some knowledge should be advanced at all costs

Scientific knowledge should be advanced at all costs but liberal arts education is so subjective and peppered with so much false and very subjective opinions that most of it is not worth advancing.  Liberal arts education should be promoted by private institutions of learning and not the government. Secular morality should be advanced at all costs and in a nutshell that means in non-emergency situations don’t destroy biodiversity, don’t lie, don’t be inefficient, don’t steal, don’t commit adultery if married, and don’t murder.
