8 PRINCIPLES OF NEGOTIATION OR COMPROMISE!!!

Some things are nonnegotiable:

First of all it is important to realize that some things are just not negotiable and if you must or want to impose your will then force or withdrawal of a privilege is the only possible solution although often a temporary one.

Try to compromise or negotiate with a terrorist or a religious fanatic who thinks your requests are those of the devil incarnate and you will fail miserably. Fanatical dogmatic beliefs are frankly nonnegotiable and you are delusional if you think that communication will lead to any changes in those beliefs unless you are in a superior military and monetary situation and can threaten or scare someone into submission with the fear of death or financial bankruptcy.

You rarely know ahead of time but sometimes there are nonnegotiable points or demands which the human will not change under any circumstances. You may prepare to give in to the nonnegotiable demand but get a concession in return or a promise to do something which you need or want and the human can provide you with. This too is a win win situation because you are still both getting something which you need or want.

I don’t intend to give pointers on international negotiations but the principles involved in individual negotiations or compromise also apply to some extent in international ones too.

Negotiations or compromises are statistical probabilities:

Another basic truth is that negotiations are a scientific statistical probability and not an absolute certainty. You can increase the probability of a successful negotiation but you can’t always guarantee it. You may use every trick, tip, or negotiation principle and still fail at reaching a compromise.

It greatly helps to have integrity, respect, and expertise:

One of the most important negotiation principles is being liked and/or respected by the humans with whom you are trying to negotiate. Military, economic, and moral strength are respected by national leaders but integrity and expertise are respected and sometimes even admired by common humans.

Integrity is something which should not be compromised and if you are asked to sacrifice your morality for some short duration goal then your reputation will be affected adversely. Lie, steal, commit adultery, or murder someone and you have lost your integrity as well as your good social reputation.

Exclude intense and not so intense emotions as much as possible:

Emotional outbursts or communicating with much emotion can doom a negotiation because any strong indication of anger or arrogance will cause impulsive defensive actions or basically saying no to everything. Stay as cool, calm, and collected as possible in total discussion mode. Also don’t come in with a strong emotional attitude of arrogance or superiority with cockiness, overconfidence, bluster, offensive personal attacks such as insults, put downs, name calling, humiliation, and ridicule. No deal will be the result.

Know your adversary as much as possible:

This means finding out all that you can about your adversary before the negotiation. What they believe, what they think, what they do and who their associates or friends are will give you an idea whether they are negotiating from weakness or from strength. If you don’t know all the vital details ahead of time then the negotiation itself is a time to ask smart questions which will reveal important beliefs, opinions, and relationships.

Use time to your advantage:

Sometimes you can yield to or refuse a demand for a day, week, month, or years after which you either agree to renegotiate or switch to getting your demand for another duration. Time has an interesting way of changing minds because sometimes during duration ongoing circumstances almost force one to compromise.

Decrease and/or increase the frequency and/or length of a behavior or activity:

Sometimes a family compromise is merely decreasing the frequency and/or length of a behavior or doing it less often and not so long. Both spouses may feel that one is spending too much time on a behavior or activity which is causing family problems or personal dissatisfaction. The compromise is to promise to exchange behavior reductions and to shop less or spend less time on sports.

Spending more time on a behavior or activity may also be a compromise. One spouse may promise to spend more time interacting with offspring and the other may promise to spend more time researching recipes for tasty new home meals.

The third form of compromise is one spouse promising to increase an activity or behavior and the other promising to decrease an activity or behavior.

Stop or promise to never do that behavior or activity again is another possibility in a compromise.

A good behavior or activity can be increased or decreased in frequency and duration during a compromise but a bad behavior or activity should only be decreased in frequency and duration in a compromise. Immoral behavior or activity should be stopped.

Using the herd instinct or desire to belong to a group:

Sometimes compromise is more successful if you can point to many humans who are doing what you need or want to be done by a human. Peer or group pressure is sometimes a disadvantage in parental negotiations but if peers or groups are doing something right or it is something that you approve of then you can try to use peer or group pressure in a negotiation.

Stay focused on your goal(s):

Some aggressive negotiators, especially high pressure saleshumans, will try to intimidate, ignore, or cleverly change the subject to get you to say yes so try not to lose your focus on the goal(s) which you actually need or want and not those which you don’t want or need.

During a negotiation I had to repeat myself four times or ask one car salesman what was my yearly interest on a car loan based on a $3000 down payment. He ignored me or changed the subject four times before he finally came up with a printout in writing.

Some of us have realistic hopes for the future but unfortunately many of us are burdened with disappointing unrealistic hopes which never are achieved nor can realistically be achieved. It is one thing to exist in everlasting unrealistic hope and not do much to achieve that end and it is another more prudent approach to actively work at trying to make realistic hopes a reality.

The “failures” in life sometimes place their last hopes in luck or the lottery and the more successful ones try mightily to improve themselves and their achievements in life no matter what their age.

Most of us should be thankful that we don’t exist in circumstances where our primary hope is just to survive to live another day.

You can be irreverent about politics, religion, sports, scientific theoretical physics, etc., especially if you personally feel that you have no respect for the subject and especially no respect for the dominant humans in that subject area.

We all have impulsive tendencies to do things our way or the way that we have been doing it for years and frequently don’t welcome changes from these tendencies with a very open logical mind. Tendencies are conditioned emotional attitudes towards things and circumstances and they are to a large extent based on our prior experiences and habits which we have developed in life with similar things and circumstances.

Whether you have a tendency to overeat, to argue too much, to talk too much, to drink alcohol too much, to prefer certain features in the opposite sex, to like a certain standard of living, to be introverted or extroverted, all these impulsive tendencies are your misfortune if they are bad and your fortune if they are good tendencies.

Logic plays a very small role in changing tendencies and it is only crisis situations which will sometimes make you change your tendencies to do things the usual  tried and personally preferred way.

Reinforcement: n. increasing the strength of a subset(s)

We commonly think of troop reinforcements which means increasing the quantity or adding more troops to the battle or adding more police to the police force.

There is also behavior reinforcement which means increasing the frequency or the number of times that a behavior is repeated so that it is learned properly and has staying power.

There is also reinforcing your loving feelings with much loving behavior. There is also the reinforcement of cement with rebar which strengthens the cement structure.

In effect if you increase the frequency, quantity, intensity, or strength of something then you are probably reinforcing.

If you increase the quantity of the food which you buy then humans don’t commonly think of this as reinforcing food so quantity alone sometimes does not determine whether you are actually reinforcing something.

To make more powerful is usually what reinforcing is all about.

If the obsession is also compulsive then you have an irrational, irresistible, impulsive urge to do it despite the fact that you may feel what you are doing is wrong and wish that you were not in the predicament that you are in.

Obsessive compulsive addictions or disorders are excessive washing, taking mind altering addictive drugs, hoarders, orderliness fanatics, fanatical perfectionists, excessive doubters, excessive danger checkers, and fearful questioning sinners.

If you are passionate about something then the chances are great that you are also obsessed with that something.

Mathematics is an imprecise tool for the physical world when the concept of zero and infinity is used in equations. It leads to metaphysical conclusions about the physical world.

In relativity there is infinite energy, mass, gravity or a black hole at a point in space leading to incomprehensible questions about what happens to information or whether physical reality gets totally destroyed. New theories are getting more realistic and addressing the singularity problem claiming that in the real world a black hole must occupy space and time which the classical theory of relativity totally ignores.

In string theory there is the concept of infinite energy or frequency when the two points of a vibrating string meet. String theory still has not addressed the problem theoretically of this singularity and it is just a question of time before it too will be updated and one will assume that the string or vibration must occupy space or volume and time for it to be a valid theory.

I welcome an attempt to eliminate singularities from equations because without their elimination the creationist frame of mind will persist and scientists will be creating something out of nothing on into the foreseeable future. I believe in the conservation of something which gets transformed and sometimes appears as energy, mass, or gravity and I definitely don’t believe that that something can be totally destroyed or disappear into a void.

Yes, it is possible that that something may be absorbed by dark mass or dark energy or dark gravity and seem to disappear from the universe that we can measure and observe but I don’t believe that that something can be destroyed into nothingness or zero.

I also don’t believe that time can be created or destroyed but is infinite unless applied in quantum intervals to the physical world. With this approach it is illogical to ask the questions- When did time begin? or Can we begin time all over again from zero?

Cycles or vibrations per second and distance per second are the ways that time is used to try and understand reality. One is string theory and the other is relativity. Can string theory and relativity be merged?

String theory tries to address the concept of number per second and relativity tries to address the concept of distance per second. Merging the two theories means number and distance must be combined which is an impossibility because number and distance are two independent variables. That is why neither string theory nor relativity is a total answer to what the physical world is really like but both if merged will have two independent variables whose values will never really be known.

It is the problem of two independent not dependent variables. String theory assumes dependence of vibrations and time and relativity assumes dependence of distance and time. Neither explanation will ever be the total truth of a complete explanation of physical reality.

The scientific underlying problem is describing a particle or wave standing still and one in motion all using one equation. Maybe the particle or wave always moves in straight lines or in orbit around other particles or waves but you still have to differentiate between the two possibilities. The particle or wave is either moving in orbit around a relatively large or small mass or moving in a straight line away from that mass and can’t be doing both at the same time. If mass is just energy or a wave then how do you describe energy “standing still”?

Yes, there is distance or wavelength in a frequency but how then is this wavelength related to the distance traveled by the particle or wavelength or WHAT determines when the frequency is relatively stationary and when it is not relatively stationary but in linear motion? Maybe the quantum frequency(s) determines whether it is in linear motion or not and is a quantum phenomenon of go or no go or linear motion or no linear motion. I feel that no one frequency determines the go or no go of an energy packet. So what does?

Information is also energy in motion and stored energy which is relatively stationary. Maybe the key to it all is defining what something or information really is if not a function of energy only or a function of energy and mass but not at the same time. I am currently researching the definition of information and will comment if I learn something new.

One grand simple unified theory of everything mathematically is not possible and anyone in search of a quest to do so is a delusional scientific charlatan. One theory of everything? Delusional BS!!!!!!

Attempt: v. to try with a relatively low probability of achievement

Attempting is not only trying but trying something which has a relatively low probability of success or trying something with much uncertainty involved. An attempt frequently results in failure but we are tempted by the possibility that success will mean a very beneficial outcome for us. Many attempts are half-hearted or with little commitment and we frequently invest very little of our time, energy, and money because of our sense of uncertainty.

I attempted windsurfing in high winds and rather quickly gave up realizing that I was just not strong enough and coordinated enough to do it successfully. I could have tried with a smaller sail but that meant more investment of time, energy, and money which wasn’t something which I wanted to do on vacation in Hawaii.

Adjustments are made to achieve a goal(s) and it can  be done in one of four basic ways or in combination.

When told to “adjust this”-

You can change the quantity or amount such as adding or subtracting the amount of salt and/or pepper in a recipe.

You can move an item around physically such as moving around flowers in a bouquet arrangement or moving furniture around in a room or moving something spatially.

You can add and/or subtract a recipe ingredient(s)

You can change the frequency of an event(s) and/or behavior(s).

With events and behaviors you can change the amount by changing the duration that the behavior(s) and/or event(s) exists.

Adjustments can be as simple as changing the position of the scope on a rifle and as complex as shooting down a missile with another missile or changing the behavior of a group of very different humans.

THE TRUTH ABOUT FREQUENCY***

Frequency: n. the number of similar and/or different subset(s) per unit of time

One of the greatest errors in logic is assuming the world is black or white, good or bad, yes or no, always or never, antonym or synonym, right or wrong when the real way of looking at the world is judging it with frequency or thinking infrequently, sometimes, frequently, and very frequently or rarely, not often, sometimes, quite often, and almost all the time. Often means the same thing as frequently so I try not to use it because I am trying to eliminate synonyms in my writing and keep it as logical as possible.

Judging whether you have a good or bad habit or if someone else has a good or bad habit is to ask how frequently is it existing? If you are doing something good very frequently then you probably have a good habit and if you are doing something bad very frequently then you probably have a bad habit.

Before stereotyping or name calling an individual ask yourself how frequently does the stereotype exist? If a human is foolish very frequently then they could potentially be called a fool but if the frequency of the foolish actions is low then it is inappropriate to try and label someone a fool.

An important question to ask yourself is how frequently am I doing something or how frequently are you doing something? If you are unhappy then by asking how frequently you are unhappy you can judge whether it is a problem or something quite natural. If you are unhappy once a day  for a relatively short time then you have nothing to worry about but if you are unhappy four times a day or unhappy all day long then maybe you need a change in your lifestyle. In effect, if you are frequently unhappy then start to worry and maybe try to do something about it.

If you are called stupid, crazy, or lazy once a month then you probably have nothing to worry about but if you are called stupid, crazy, or lazy once a day or once every two days then your stupid, crazy, or lazy frequency is great and you may have to start worrying about it and maybe start changing your behavior.

In a command and obey world  with a command and obey language usage you are very frequently asked to do something and your choices are limited to yes or no or doing something or not doing it and this brainwashes you into thinking that it is a yes or no world.

The more mature you get and the more logical your mind becomes the more you realize that instead of a yes or no, white or black world that there are frequently shades of grey also and that many arguments and misunderstandings are started with a right or wrong mentality when the real way of judging is realizing that it might be mostly or partly right or mostly or partly wrong.

My wife without a logical science background was a perfect example of language brainwashing and frequently said “You always do that” when in fact I did it sometimes and it seemed to her that I did it all the time!!!!!!
