THE TRUTH ABOUT GLOAT*

GLOAT2

Gloat: v. to sense great satisfaction for another’s misfortune

Gloating is hard to avoid if someone’s misfortune benefits you personally and the same applies to business failures which surviving businesses probably gloat about to some extent. Excluding competition encourages a gloating response later on and it is unfortunately a truism about the human condition and its institutions.

The urge to monopolize is great and that means misfortune for some as they either get destroyed financially or become absorbed or purchased by a bigger conglomerate.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MISFORTUNE+

Misfortune

Misfortune: n. bad (luck and/or circumstances)

Some misfortunes such as being the victim of an accident, a birth defect, a war, a bad environment, or a dysfunctional family is really not your fault and you can be considered to be the victim of bad luck.

There are many financial, relationship, and addiction misfortunes which you personally can be blamed for as being the primary reason for the misfortune. Yes, some financial, relationship, and addiction misfortunes may not totally be your fault and you may have just had the misfortune of associating with bad humans who were partially or mostly to blame.

Philosophically you can blame nature, society, or yourself for misfortune and the truth is that all three can be and are potential causes of misfortune.

THE TRUTH ABOUT UNSYMPATHETIC*

'I assume this means dinner will be late.'

‘I assume this means dinner will be late.’

Unsympathetic: adj. having no empathy when a lifeform(s) is experiencing a misfortune(s)

Being unsympathetic basically means that you see someone experiencing misfortune and you don’t feel sorry or don’t care for them or empathy is absent for the misfortune.

An very unsympathetic spouse is a difficult thing to live with because they are seldom there to reassure or help you when you need reassurance or help for your misfortunes in life.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SYMPATHY

with-deepest-sympathy-kristin-elmquist

Sympathy: n. empathy with a lifeform(s)’s misfortune

If it is a death in the family or some permanent irreversible misfortune then the best that you can do is sympathize by sharing a similar misfortune in your life or writing a sympathy card giving emotional support.

In a family situation saying that you feel someone’s pain for misfortune and merely emotionally sympathizing with them is frequently not enough sympathy. You should also follow up with some useful advice and/or caring which will decrease the odds that the misfortune will happen again.

If your offspring gets an F grade then you should give some useful advice on how to avoid it happening again such as with better study or work habits and you may even have to supervise your offspring and check their knowledge of the subject matter before the next test.

Adults should be largely responsible for their own misfortunes in life but even here if you have some useful advice on how to avoid future misfortune then you should spend some of your valuable time giving your best advice on the matter so it doesn’t happen again.
