WHAT DOES RESILIENCE MEAN AND HOW CAN YOU BECOME MORE RESILIENT???

Resilience: n. having an ability to recover relatively quickly from difficult personal consequences

An appropriate personal attitude, an ability to overcome personal mistakes and problems, and resourcefulness in getting help from researched useful knowledge and assistance from others is basically what creates a resilient human who can relatively quickly recover from difficult personal consequences.

A basically optimistic attitude, selfcontrol, selfesteem, and confidence, accepting and adjusting to one’s weaknesses and mostly using one’s strengths, a recognition or selfawareness of one’s and other’s emotional states all constitute an appropriate personal attitude.

An ability to set and choose to pursue realistic goals, having realistic expectations, an ability to gather relevant information or selfeducate, avoiding some serious problems with forethought and advance planning, a financial reserve or insurance for emergencies, and an ability to discuss and think about problems rather than argue about them will all help in learning from your mistakes and help problem solving.

Finally knowing how to selfeducate or use search engines to get relevant information and knowing what humans to consult or get help from on a relevant topic or situation will usually provide the knowledge and assistance necessary to get one out of bad circumstances in a reasonable period of time.

Of course you can ask- how do you develop selfcontrol and problem solving abilities? The answer is selfeducation and/or experience in disciplining oneself and knowledge about problem solving techniques or experience in solving problems. Resilience is not something that we are born with but is something which we usually acquire through the experience of confronting problems and solving them and making mistakes and then correcting them or learning from them so that the same mistakes are not repeated again in the future.

You can live and learn mostly through experience but the smarter ones amongst us learn from the historical experience of others who have confronted similar problems in their lives and solved them or have advice on how to avoid similar problems in the first place. Yes, it greatly helps if you have resilient role models to learn from.

Many humans are not very resilient and get out of their problematic circumstances sooner or often later, but a resilient human will get out of a bad circumstance relatively quickly.

Develop emotional intelligence:

Only about a third of the population is consciously aware of their emotional reactions when they happen or have emotional control and awareness. Those that do understand and can tolerate strong negative emotions in others without aggressively lashing out with defensive anger are also not easily frustrated.

Emotional intelligence is largely learned by much experience or interaction with many diverse humans and it is an ability to read, empathize, and react appropriately with other humans. My educated guess is that having emotionally intelligent parents, coming from a family with many offspring, being a leader of school activities, and socializing much all help in making you more emotionally intelligent at an earlier age since emotional intelligence is largely learned and not an inborn ability.

Develop confidence:

Real confidence originates from competence or a belief that one can handle most situations and human interactions competently. For most average humans competence takes time to learn but high achievers and ambitious humans have a distinct advantage because they are internally motivated or are selfconfident by nature.

Be adaptable:

Recognize that new circumstances or failure may mean doing things a little differently so that old mistakes are not repeated over and over again. Adapting to changing goals, changed circumstances, and changing results is a sign that you have courageously overcome your fear of change and embrace it.

Don’t be afraid to say no:

When you have prior commitments which must be fulfilled one of the worst things that you can do is overburden yourself with new commitments which endanger the old. Avoid saying “I’m not sure”, “I don’t think I can do it”, “I’m not certain”, or “Maybe” because it can be the source for overwork, too much stress, depression, and maybe even job burnout.

Don’t let the fear of mistakes and failure handicap you:

View mistakes and failure as a learning experience and a challenge to not fail the same way a second time. If you think that new useful information, knowledge, or skills are necessary then take time out to acquire them before you attempt some goal again with plan B. Distance yourself emotionally from past failures but don’t forget some of the details which made it into a learning experience, hopefully not to be repeated again the same way.

Revel in your own accomplishments and that of others:

Enjoy and take pride in your accomplishments and don’t depress yourself with a comparison with someone better. Similarly, don’t depressingly point to someone who accomplished more when complimenting another for his or her success.

Don’t hold grudges:

Forgiving without asking for an apology is often the smart thing to do because festering hate or anger is a form of lasting mental victimization which you should want no part of.

Be relentlessly enthusiastic with much optimism:

Don’t let bad current events and bad offensive remarks ruin your optomistic attitude, especially if it is something which you have no personal control over.

Don’t forget to recharge your body:

Try to eat healthy organic food, get enough exercise, and get enough sleep because you can’t function at optimal mental efficiency daily with an unhealthy sleep deprived body.

Some humans radiate confidence and energy no matter how much money they have or how socially connected they are. Humans are attracted to them not so much because of their looks but because of the optimistic friendly ways that they interact with humans. Here are the major reasons why a personality seems so attractive and maybe even slightly irresistible.

They have integrity or are morally sound and trustworthy giving sincere honest compliments and praise when deserved and don’t lie or deceive others. They are dependable and try to fulfill any promises that they make or fulfill responsibilities which they assume.

They are good listeners and ask relevant smart follow up questions which show a genuine interest in others and make others feel respected and important. They shy away from small or trivial talk which can bore or annoy others.

They are good at reading others and treat them the way that they want to be treated. They realize that some are extroverted, love praise and attention, interaction, and public approval and that others are rather private and introverted and like to keep their lives and accomplishments largely to themselves.

They tactfully ask or make note of the likes and dislikes of a human and what they are most proud of and occasionally converse on those topics with the human making stronger emotional connections.

They recognize the difference between fact and opinion and follow an opinion with a statement that it is a personal opinion and may not be a fact which allows others to have opposing opinions without feeling that they are being harshly criticized or put down for stupidity. Sports, politics, religion, GMO’s, global warming, etc. are areas where intelligent humans can agree to disagree because most of the topics are opinions or differing beliefs and not scientifically proven facts.

They smile, look good but don’t overdo it, and are passionately optimistic with a genuine interest in life and humans despite any transient personal problems which they might have which they don’t go out of their way to advertise.

CONCLUSION: If you have integrity, are trustworthy, dependable, friendly, confident, optimistic, and competent then there is a great probability that you will be respected and even admired. An attractive or irresistible personality goes further and knows how to communicate well, read humans, and make appropriate compliments, praise, and encouragement which motivates humans to excel, do their best, and be exemplary moral citizens.

Some of us are more inclined to be pessimistic and feel that the bad events in our lives will far outnumber the good and don’t confront the world with much optimism and applied effort.

Many pessimists are fatalistic and feel that nothing in the world will improve and will rather become worse as time passes.

Not all pessimists are miserable and lead miserable lives with miserable friends but frequently humans do not want to associate with pessimistic personalities because many are so devoid of hope for the future and fail to inspire others to do better in their lives.

Prepare for the worst and plan for the best is a healthy dose of pessimism and optimism which is what a realistic appraisal of reality demands.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ATTITUDE

Attitude: n. a relatively constant habitual stored processing set of thinking and/or sensing which frequently affects a person’s corresponding behavior

 

Most of us express attitude in terms of the two extremes which are optimism and pessimism. In fact most of us have attitudes which fall somewhere between the two extremes and we are not overly optimistic nor are we overly pessimistic.

 

It is wise to think relatively optimistically about future good outcomes or goals but to realize pessimistically that there will probably be many mistakes or bad things which will happen trying to reach those good outcomes or goals.

 

Having a plan B or plan C if plan A fails is a realistic way of living life and will keep you trying to optimistically achieve goals though sometimes in an unforeseen roundabout way.

 

A confident attitude is charismatic to some extent and will attract the opposite sex and is fundamental in leadership as long as the confidence stems from real accomplishments and successes and not an over inflated ego without a solid foundation.

Confident: adj. freedom from most doubt when trying to achieve something and this frequently exists with a large belief in oneself and in one’s abilities

Sometimes a courageous attitude which doesn’t give up easily but wants to continue to struggle against life’s many setbacks and hopes to overcome them or avoid them to maximize happiness is the right attitude to have.

Courageous: adj. continuing to pursue a goal(s) when the odds are against you and/or when the pursuit of the goal(s) is filled with danger.

THE TRUTH ABOUT AFFIRMATIONS

Affirmations or optimistic communications about yourself theoretically should make you feel better about yourself and motivate you to improve yourself and your circumstances. However, be aware that some affirmations are delusional and not always true.

There is sometimes a big difference between what you WANT to be and what you ACTUALLY or REALISTICALLY are and the lofty goals which you make for yourself may be highly improbable or not possible to achieve.

Brainwashing yourself verbally or mentally into believing that you can be or get anything that you WANT, that you can do anything that you WANT, that your confidence is growing every day, and that you are a beautiful human may not be totally accurate or a reality. For self-praise to be a successful motivating tool it must be a true statement about yourself and not a delusional untrue one.

Humans have their ups and downs in life but here are some signs that you are probably a relatively happy human and will probably stay that way.

 

You share your happiness

You compliment humans appropriately and are generally kind to them thus trying to spread your happiness to others too who will probably reciprocate with similar happy compliments and acts of kindness thus increasing your happiness in the future also.

 

You don’t worry about the little problems or mistakes in your life

You focus your attention on the good things in your life most of the time and don’t let minor annoyances ruin your generally optimistic good mood. You don’t get overly upset when humans don’t text you back, you get stuck in traffic, you spill coffee, you miss your favorite show, you don’t feed the pet, or you don’t put out the garbage on time.

 

You are grateful for and get satisfaction from the little things in life

You enjoy spending time with family, friends, your favorite show or music, and enjoy exercising occasionally. If you are a loner then you have interesting things to occupy your time which gives you satisfaction.

 

You revel in other human’s successes

You enjoy hearing about other human’s successes and frequently join them in their happiness which adds to the total moments of happiness which you can experience in life. You are happy about your own achievements but also happy about the achievements of others who may be important in your life.

 

You get satisfaction from doing things in the present

It turns out that a human is happier engrossed in doing something than thinking about or daydreaming about doing something in the future. When your mind wanders then you are not as happy as when you are doing something in the moment.

 

You have good relationships with humans or a good relationship with yourself

Good trusting relationships with humans can increase your happy experiences but even loners can be happy with themselves if they occupy their time doing things which make them happy when they are alone.

 

You know how to handle your stress

You know how to take breaks, meditate, exercise, or spend some time talking to friends to reduce stress during peak stress periods.

 

You try to maintain an optimistic outlook even in the face of failure or pessimistic outcomes

You are determined not to let temporary failure, mistakes, or other bad events permanently ruin your generally optimistic outlook. You generally have a can do attitude.

 

You prefer associating with happy humans

Happiness is contagious and if you are happy and show it then other humans who are either happy or want to be happy will gravitate to you.

 

You set short duration and long duration goals and achieve them

You are a goal setter and achiever which increases your sense of self-worth and makes you a happier human.

 

You sleep better

There have been studies which show that happy humans get better sleep so if you are not having any problems with sleep which is either not sleeping enough or sleeping too much then you are probably relatively happy in life.

 

CONCLUSION:

Happiness is contagious so if you try to associate with humans who are happy themselves then you will increase your chances of remaining happy. A happy optimistic attitude is ultimately your responsibility if you want it. Apply happiness tips to your life.

If you are a loner it will be harder to be happy but you can still be happy by doing satisfying things in life which do not necessarily include other humans. If you work towards and get a good paying job then you will be able to afford good healthy food and some material luxuries which are a good foundation for future family relationships if you want them.

Honesty is the best policy.

If you are honest it means that you are truthful and sincere and this is the kind of person others want to associate with. You can translate this into success in life with added effort, reliability, and achievement. A good reputation means trustworthiness and reliability which is impossible without honesty as a foundation.

 

A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.

This just means that immoral people in greater positions of power have the opportunity to steal much more than an immoral common man or woman.

 

If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

If someone tells you that you have suddenly won much money, especially from a stranger, it is probably not true. If someone tells you that you have gotten a valuable gift or valuable tickets for free, it is probably not true.

Many scams sound temptingly inviting, but they are almost all untruthful cons. If something can be gotten with much time, effort, and money and someone suggests that you can get it for free or almost for free-beware!!!!!!

 

Better to give than to receive.

This is untrue propaganda widely spread by altruists and social do-gooders who want people to dedicate their lives to helping the unfortunate in society.  The truth is that it is better to both give and receive in most human activities.

At the beginning of most human relationships it is probably better to give more than you receive but as the relationship matures there should be more giving and receiving for both parties or the relationship will remain very lopsided and dysfunctional master slave relationship.

 

Words once spoken can never be recalled.

This is just a statement of fact but it also implies that sometimes words are said in anger or under stressful circumstances which we later come to regret.  Calling your wife an idiot or a bitch in a fit of anger can haunt you for a long time even though time is supposed to heal all wounds.

 

Birds of a feather, flock together

This is a general fact of life that humans with similar opinions, interests, education levels, and economic levels tend to associate with each other more frequently than with humans that are very different from them.

 

Forgiveness is an important key to happiness.

Forgiveness is only one of the keys to happiness but without it there can be unnecessary long periods of resentment for a personal wrong or mistake that has been done.

 

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

The pleasant memory of kind words recurs in the brain long after the kind words are said and the enjoyment of those words also recurs in the brain.

 

If a million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing

This is just a statement of the fact that if a million humans believe in something stupid then it is still stupid or if they believe that a lie is the truth then it is still a lie.

 

An optimistic attitude means all the difference in the world

Being an optimist rather than a pessimist is indeed a big difference in attitudes and it will affect your life in so many important ways. Many more humans will be interested in befriending you if you have an optimistic attitude.

Opportunity is a subset(s) of circumstances which makes it possible to achieve a goal(s). You frequently need extensive knowledge and skills to be ready when opportunity exists.  Little adequate preparation will frequently make you pass an opportunity since opportunities rarely depend mostly on luck.  Good luck usually just makes the achievement of a goal(s) more probable and immediate.

OPTIMISTIC

A belief that a goal(s) will be achieved with a relatively great degree of probability and a general belief that good events will outnumber the bad events in life.

WHAT AN OPTIMIST DOES TO REMAIN OPTIMISTIC

They are thankful for the good and bad things in their life

Optimists not only remind themselves of the good things in their lives and are grateful but they look on bad things as a challenge for improvement and a learning experience which can be used for a better tomorrow.  If something bad can’t be changed by them or others they learn to accept, ignore, or live with the bad things and don’t stress over them.

Optimists share their good and bad moments with others

Not all optimists are sociable extroverts who share their experiences with others and sometimes get valuable feedback and sometimes even encouragement from others. Introverts too can benefit by sharing their good and bad experiences with family and close friends for mutual benefit. Feeling that you are alone in your struggles in the world can sometimes be depressing and being able to share with others can frequently lessen any signs of depression which you may be fighting with from time to time.

Optimists are more forgiving than your average human

Optimists frequently forgive others if the behavior is not immoral and don’t hold grudges against others. They accept the past as unchangeable and don’t let bad experiences and mistakes cause by others to overly affect their future plans, actions, and thoughts.

Optimists listen more and talk less

Optimists radiate confidence and are respected more by others because they listen and let others do most of the talking. They give relatively short and to the point answers or responses whenever possible.

Optimists are not envious or jealous

Optimists don’t feel that other human successes are not deserved or unjust. They view other human accomplishments as motivations to do better in their own lives. They are not jealous and envious of others and don’t waste time thinking how unfair the world is to them.

Optimists smile more and frown less when in the company of others

Optimists don’t have to fake happiness because they frequently smile or laugh at their bad circumstances and mistakes in front of others.

An optimist is goal oriented and plans beyond intervening bad circumstances

An optimist does not worry about the future with all the possible problems which may arise but views life as a challenge to overcome obstacles and get to worthwhile goals in life.

Optimists don’t blame others for their lack of progress in life

Optimists do not blame the economy, the boss, coworkers, spouse, or someone else for their lack of progress in life. They feel personally responsible for progress in life and try to change their lives so they are prepared with the right skills and education when opportunity exists.

An optimist never gives up

No matter how bad the past may have been the optimist looks forward to a better future and makes plans and does take actions to make it so.

 

An optimist eats healthy and gets enough exercise

An optimist realizes that a healthy body is a prerequisite for a happy healthy mental life.
