THE TRUTH ABOUT DISCIPLINE

Discipline: v. to use appropriate rewards and/or punishments to get obedience to a set of rules which limit behavior and create selfcontrol to speed up achieving a new goal(s)

 

Being disciplined by others is sometimes an unpleasant experience but teaching yourself selfdiscipline and disciplining yourself on your own is even harder to do and can be very unpleasant at times. Selfdiscipline is vital to success in life and it basically means learning new knowledge and skills on your own or doing so with the investment of personal time, energy, effort, and achievement.

 

Rewarding with praise or material rewards must be done judiciously so that your rewards are appropriate to the achievement. If you constantly give great enthusiastic praise for mediocre accomplishments or give great material rewards for mediocre or even minimal accomplishments then the one whom you are disciplining will fail to tell the difference between a truly great accomplishment and a mediocre one and your verbal and physical rewards will no longer be a motivating factor. The reward should fit or correspond to the accomplishment just as the punishment should fit or correspond to the crime or bad behavior.

 

Punishment should also be in appropriate degrees so that the one being disciplined can differentiate between very bad, bad, and not so bad results. If an offspring lies or steals then the punishment should be severe with the withdrawal of a very desirable privilege or even a spanking of a very young offspring if lying or stealing is almost becoming habitual. Lying and stealing is a moral transgression and should not be tolerated in the family unit! Being grounded may not be adequate punishment these days but the withdrawal of cell phone or computer privileges may be a deterrent to future bad behavior.

 

Learning new knowledge and skills takes much selfdiscipline and you should start early teaching your offspring the joys of learning new knowledge and skills by example, motivating, and sharing in the learning experience.

IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE OR DO SOMETHING BAD SAY YOUR SORRY AND DON’T LIE WITH A STUPID EXCUSE WHICH WILL HURT YOUR REPUTATION!!!!!!

Excusev. to attempt to subtract blame for a mistake and/or offense and trying to defend and/or justify the action(s) with a real reason and/or lie

 

WHEN WE MAKE A MISTAKE THE NATURAL URGE IS TO WANT TO BLAME THE MISTAKE ON SOMEONE OR SOMETHING AND NOT ACCEPT THE TRUTH THAT YOU ARE TO BLAME FOR THE MISTAKE AND NOTHING OR NO ONE ELSE IS USUALLY THE REASON FOR IT.  

AFTER AN APPOLOGY YOU MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO PROMISE THAT IT WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN OR THAT YOU WON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE AGAIN.

THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA BECAUSE IF YOU MAKE A PROMISE YOU SHOULD TRY TO KEEP IT AND CHANCES ARE IT WILL TAKE YOU A WHILE TO CHANGE YOUR BEHAVIOR WHICH CAUSED THE MISTAKE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

THE BEST THING TO DO AFTER AN APPOLOGY IS TO FEEL BAD AND RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISTAKE AND MAKE UP YOUR MIND TO ANALYZE THE CIRCUMSTANCE AND MAKE BEHAVIOR CHANGES IN YOURSELF SO THAT IT WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN OR AT LEAST NOT SO FREQUENTLY IF IT IS A HABITUAL MISTAKE WHICH YOU ARE MAKING.

PUNCTUALITY OR BEING ON TIME OR DOING SOMETHING ON TIME IS WHERE MOST OF US HAVE PROBLEMS. WE MAY FORGET ABOUT AN APPOINTMENT OR NOT LEAVE EARLY ENOUGH AND GET CAUGHT UP IN TRAFFIC OR DEVIATE BY A HOME RESPONSIBILITY SUCHAS OFFSPRING WITH AN EMERGENCY OR SOME URGENT ACTIVITY WHICH WE ARE DOING AND HAS TOP PRIORITY IN YOUR LIFE.

IF YOU ARE FORGETFUL THEN PROGRAM AN ALARM CLOCK AT HOME OR ON YOUR CELLPHONE TO REMIND YOU OF THE APPOINTMENT AND CHECK YOUR CALENDAR EVERY DAY AS A HABIT TO SEE IF YOU HAVE PROMISED TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH SOMEONE THAT DAY.

TO DO TASKS WHICH ARE UNPLEASANT TO DO BUT HAVE TO BE DONE ON TIME WHEN THEY ARE SCHEDULED START ON THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND DON’T PROCRASTINATE OR WASTE TIME DOING SOMETHING UNIMPORTANT BUT PLEASURABLE IN YOUR LIFE.

THIS WILL REQUIRE A LOT OF SELFDISCIPLINE BECAUSE IT IS NATURAL FOR SOMEONE TO WANT TO AVOID UNPLESANT EXPERIENCES.

BEING LATE ON A JOB TASK WHICH IS UNPLEASANT TO DO OR DOING UNPLEASANT HOMEWORK AND PROCRASTINATING IS AN ETERNAL STRUGGLE WITH YOUR EMOTIONS WHICH DON’T WANT TO DO AN UNPLEASANT TASK. 

START DEVELOPING A PHILOSOHY OF LIFE WHICH IS NOT “ I WILL DO ONLY WHAT FEELS GOOD” BUT “I WILL DO EVERYTHING WHICH IS IMPORTANT IN MY LIFE WHETHER OR NOT I ENJOY DOING IT”.

MOTIVATING YOURSELF TO COURAGEOUSLY AND RESPONSIBLY HANDLE THE HARDSHIPS IN YOUR LIFE WHICH HAVE A HIGH PRIORITY IS DIFFICULT BUT REALISTICALLY IT IS YOUR JOB TO DO THE UNPLEASANT THINGS IN YOUR LIFE AND ACCEPT THE BAD AS WELL AS THE GOOD AND DO BOTH IN A RESPONSIBLE WAY.

REMEMBER THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD EXCUSE OR A SMART EXCUSE TO JUSTIFY YOUR IRRESPONSIBILITY OR DESIRE NOT TO FULLFIL YOUR DUTIES IN LIFE.

“I DIDN’T SHOW UP AT WORK BECAUSE I WAS OUT WITH A CLIENT PLAYING GOLF” IS NOT A SMART EXCUSE. IF YOU REALLY WERE A GOOD BUSINESSMAN OR WOMAN YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TO TRY AND MAKE A SALE BASED ON FRIENDSHIP AND GETTING FAVORABLE PURCHASES FROM A CLIENT BECAUSE HE HAS BECOME A GOOD BUDDY OF YOURS.

YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE SHOULD SELL ITSELF BASED ON ITS MERITS OR QUALITY AND FRIENDSHIP HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AN EFFICIENT PROFITABLE BUSINESS TRANSACTION.

WHILE IT IS TRUE THAT FOR UPPER MANAGEMENT MAKING FRIENDS WITH OTHER BUSINESS LEADERS AND CREATING A GOOD CONTACT NETWORK IS IMPORTANT ONLY CLOSE FRIENDS SHOULD BE INVITED TO PLAY GOLF WITH YOU AND IF THAT CLOSE FRIEND IS ALSO A GOOD CLIENT OF YOURS THEN YOU COULD JUSTIFY PLAYING GOLF WITH HIM OR HER.

“WHY DON’T YOU EXERCISE?” AND THE EXCUSES GIVEN ARE “I DON’T HAVE THE TIME AND IT IS BORING AND I AM TOO TIRED TO MOVE AND I ALWAYS END UP QUITING AND I DON’T GET A BREAK FROM THE OFFSPRING AND I’M TOO OLD AND I’M TOO FAT AND I’M THIN ALREADY AND I’M NOT A GYM RAT AND I HAVE ARTHRITIS OR MY BACK HURTS”

EXERCISE CAN BE BORING IF YOU DON’T HAVE SOMEONE TO MOTIVATE YOU BY JOINING IN BUT ALL THE OTHER EXCUSES ARE NOT NECESSARY.

THE TRUTH IS THAT EXERCISE IN YOUR YOUTH AND MIDDLE AGE IS NOT REALLY NECESSARY IF YOU ARE NOT STRESSED ON THE JOB AND NEED EXERCISE AS ONE MEANS OF TAKING YOUR MIND OFF YOUR WORK FOR A PAUSE WHICH CAN REFRESH YOU.

WHEN YOUR JOINT MUSCLES START GETTING STIFF IN OLD AGE THAT IS THE TIME WHEN YOU SHOULD START THINKING ABOUT A LITTLE EXERCISE SO YOUR MUSCLES DON’T DETERIORATE AS FAST AS THEY WOULD LIKE TO DO.

IF YOU FEEL NO PAIN OR STIFFNESS THERE REALLY IS NO NEED TO EXERCISE YOUR BODY ON A REGULAR BASIS. LIVING LIFE AND DOING THINGS AND GOING PLACES IS ENOUGH EXERCISE FOR MOST OF US.

IF YOU ARE FAT EXERCISE IS NOT THE REASON YOU ARE FAT AND EXERCISE WILL NOT HELP YOU SLIM DOWN BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO CHANGE TO EATING A HEALTHY DIET TO LOSE WEIGHT AND EXERCISING WILL ONLY INCREASE YOUR APPETITE AND MAKE YOU EAT MORE FOOD WITH MORE CALORIES AND THAT IS NOT THE MESSAGE THAT YOU WANT TO BE SENDING YOUR BODY.

IF YOU ARE FAT AND ARE EATING RIGHT YOU WERE BORN THAT WAY AND THERE IS NO REASON YOU SHOULD STRUGGLE AGAINST MOTHER NATURE UNLESS YOUR JOB IS ON THE LINE AND YOU ARE AN IMPORTANT CELEBRITY IN THE PUBLIC EYE.

THEN MAYBE YOU NEED TO SLIM DOWN A LITTLE AND LOSE SOME WEIGHT BY STARVING YOURSELF ALL THE TIME AND FEELING MISERABLE ABOUT IT ON A DAILY BASIS.

SOME PROCRASTINATION EXCUSES ARE “I REALLY DON’T NEED TO DO IT NOW AND I’LL START AFTER I DO THE DISHES OR I’LL CLEAN MY DESK OR MAKE ONE LAST PHONE CALL AND IT’S REALLY NOT THAT IMPORTANT AND I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION AND I’M TOO BUSY AND IT’S NOT THE RIGHT TIME AND SOMETHING CAME UP”. FOR THE COMMON MAN OR WOMAN ALL THOSE EXCUSES ARE BS AND IT ONLY SHOWS THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO AVOID DOING WHAT IS IMPORTANT AND MUST BE DONE RIGHT AWAY OR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT I HAVE INCLUDED 13 EXCUSES FOR NOT HAVING SEX

1. “Head colds kill my libido.”

2. “But I just made the bed.”

3. “It’s raining out and I need to wake up early tomorrow.”

4. “I just took a shower and I don’t want to get sweaty again.”

5. “I ate too much dairy today.”

6. “My spirit animal doesn’t feel sexy right now.”

7. “I’m too cold.”

8. “I haven’t shaved my legs in a really long time.”

9. “I’m wearing a baggy night shirt and I feel like my mom.”

10. “I just read a really sad essay on Slate.”

11. “I’m soooo sleepy.”

12. “I forgot to take my birth control.”

13. “I have my period.”

THERE ARE TWO VERY IMPORTANT PRIORITIES IN YOUR LIFE

1.     BE ON TIME FOR YOUR ALL YOUR APPOINTMENTS AND SHOW UP ON TIME AT WORK BECAUSE IF YOU DON’T YOU ARE WASTING OR STEALING SOMEONES TIME AND ENERGY AND MONEY AND NO ONE INCLUDING YOURSELF WANTS TO BE STOLEN FROM!!!!!!

 

2.     WORK HARD AND AS CONSCIENTIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE AT THE JOB WHICH YOU NOW HAVE EVEN IF YOU HATE IT AND HATE YOUR BOSS AND THE PEOPLE YOU ARE WORKING WITH. TRY TO STAY EMPLOYED FOR AT LEAST 4 OR 6 MONTHS SO THAT YOU HAVE TIME TO LOOK FOR A NEW JOB WHILE EMPLOYED AND DON’T DEVELOP A REPUTATION OF BEING A BAD WORKER IF A FUTURE EMPLOYER LOOKS INTO YOUR JOB RECORD AND GETS POOR REFERENCES ABOUT YOUR JOB PERFORMANCE!!!!!!
