THE GOLDEN RULE MIGHT WORK IN AN IDEALIZED EGALITARIAN SOCIETY BUT NOWHERE ELSE!!!

The golden rule is really a statement of reciprocity or a back and forth exchange of something such as a behavior or actions.

Do to others what you want them to do to you. or

Treat each other as they would like to be treated themselves. or

Do unto others as we would be done by. or

Do unto me as I would do unto you.

While this rule has valid meaning in an exchange between two humans with the same or similar socioeconomic status, the same or similar moral values or basic beliefs, and the same or very similar religion, it is unworkable between very unequal humans with wide differences in ability, wealth, morality, beliefs, religion, etc.

If one human is healthy, very talented, well educated, has integrity, is wealthy, and maybe even has celebrity status and the other human is unhealthy, very ignorant or badly educated, has limited ability, is morally flawed, is financially destitute or on permanent welfare, and has a lousy reputation- the wants, desires, or needs of the two individuals or humans are as different as night and day and the question of just reciprocity or exchange becomes a very complicated issue and not intuitively obvious.

The greatly handicapped destitute human would probably want and desire at least half or more of the wealth of the talented celebrity. Is that a just social solution? Definitely not, so the egalitarian golden rule crashes and burns in this example!

The golden rule definitely does not apply to very unequal humans and unfortunately it is a fact of life that humans can in fact be very different from each other despite the fact that the majority or common humans have many more similarities and the golden rule would apply a little more relevantly to them.

Historically in a mostly agricultural society where most were farmers and craftsmen with similar income levels and common religious values, the golden rule made much more sense. Even now in a very unequal society the rules of polite reciprocal etiquette amongst most members of society apply and are still relevant.

In an egalitarian or collective society whose unrealistic aim is to make everyone EQUAL in health, wealth, ability, education, etc. the golden rule of reciprocity would apply in almost all cases because everyone would be thought of a being equal in all ways biologically and environmentally or circumstantially. The factual reality is that everyone is born biologically different with the exception of identical twins, and almost everyone is brought up in different environments or circumstances which impact how they will ultimately turn out in life.

The reciprocity of the golden rule is an interesting philosophical idea but the reality is that it is a very bad guide or has minimal value in solving social and individual problems. The golden rule in too many cases is just not a just principle to follow.

THE NEUROSCIENCE OF INTELLIGENCE!!!

Richard J. Haier has written a great book on the neuroscience of intelligence which irrefutably proposes that intelligence IQ is largely inherited and it may be possible in the future to change genes so that our offspring will be more intelligent. However, there is not conclusively just one gene which is a marker for intelligence but rather a complex arrangement of many genes and how important each one is in determining IQ is still an open question.

What is a fact is that nurture or information input will not fundamentally increase your IQ or the g factor or general intelligence factor which remains relatively constant throughout your lifetime. Yes, life or genetics is not fair and some have just been gifted with greater intelligence potential than others. Sure you can have a high IQ and not put it to good use but without a high IQ you will be struggling to keep up with those that do have high IQ’s and are working hard to put their potential to good use.

IQ is fundamentally a function of how good a memory you have and how efficient your mind is at processing information which you get through the senses. Even intelligence is not uniform in it’s power and there are those who are mathematically more intelligent than verbally and others who are more verbally intelligent than mathematically. That said it is time to change our educational system so that it is more responsive to the needs of high IQ individuals and those who are handicapped with relatively low IQs below about 85.

In a technological age it is increasingly important to get the most out of mathematically gifted individuals who can enter science, computer science, engineering, and other technological fields which are in great demand. Frankly liberal arts are no longer that important for society as they once were thought to be and most of it is frankly an excursion into subjective or biased verbosity which bores the average human and has little relevance to their daily lives and struggles.

The average human with an average IQ is fast becoming somewhat useless for society in general and it is a sad fact that a ruling technological elite will be making most of the political decisions in the future and modern society will become highly robotized. A depressed feeling of uselessness will be rampant in society and the welfare system will have to be designed to accommodate all the individuals who will fall through the cracks and not feel that they are contributing members of society.

Can a society where most of the citizens are parasites on the society survive in the long duration is a question open to debate. Already there are signs that such a society will be implemented with the idea of a guaranteed national income for everyone. It is probable that most of us will become consumers and not producers and what this will do to the fabric of responsible family units is nothing short of catastrophic. What will be the incentive to study hard and to work hard if you can take it easy, rely on the government for support, and live out your life in a hedonistic pursuit of personal pleasure?

That said I have offered solutions to this unsettling dilemma in my writings so I hope that some intelligent humans will take time out to read, reflect, and start doing something significant to make a Domesday scenario less likely.

THE PROBABLE IMPACT OF LEGALIZING DRUGS IN A HEDONISTIC SOCIETY!!!

There is some scientific evidence to suggest that if your life is going along relatively smoothly with physical health, a moral outlook, a useful education, a few good friends, good social interaction, a good paying job, financial responsibility, a happy marriage, and generally a feeling that you are contributing to society in some meaningful way that the probability that you will need or do drugs is minimal. Basically if you are moral, eat healthy, have drug free good friends, and are gainfully employed then you will seldom have a serious drug habit.

But seriously ask yourself whether society or any social program can offer equal opportunity to achieve such desirable happiness or circumstances once you have fallen through the cracks and become a habitual drug user? To gain desirable circumstances requires time, effort, sacrifice, achievement, optimization of ability, money, a moral family, and a useful educational background. Just do what feels good or follow your passion will definitely not work under most circumstances. Life is not fair for most and those are the humans more prone to drug use.

On the other hand if you are in bad physical health, don’t have a moral family, have dysfunctional friends who gamble, are promiscuous, and are financially unstable then you are in danger. If you are bad at social interaction, are badly educated, depressed, have a lousy job or no job at all, are unhappily married or not married at all, and feel that you are contributing nothing to society then drugs can be a very tempting escape mechanism to try and feel good for a change.

Increasingly western society is being filled with dysfunctional individuals isolated from wholesome human contact who do drugs to try and escape their desperate isolated or confusing lives. Others socialize with dysfunctional hedonistic friends who are lousy role models to imitate. When teenage and adult peer pressure is hedonistic then it is just a question of time before you crash and burn and potentially ruin your life and whatever future you still have ahead of you.

A society filled with rehab centers is not a very stable society and the more drugs that are legalized the greater will be the percentage of humans using them on a regular basis which many now still call an addiction problem. The opiod crisis is just the tip of the legal and illegal iceberg and legalizing all drugs as in Portugal will unfortunately eventually result in a large percentage of the largely hedonistic drug taking population being bad contributing members to society.

Maybe eventually an unhappy dysfunctional human workforce will largely be replaced with dependable, trustworthy, competent robots. What may then happen is that most of the population will be strung out on mind altering drugs most of the time and on government welfare. There is an old saying which still applies in modern times even though you don’t have to believe in devils. “Idle minds and hands are the devil’s workshop”. Simply put, if you have nothing useful to do in life then you will probably get yourself into trouble personally and socially.

If drugs are legalized then there will be more children, students, nannies, teachers,  vocational and professional workers in responsible positions strung out on drugs and making the workforce more dangerous and inefficient than it already is. Can any nation with legalized drugs survive and be powerful, respected, and morally functional in other than a third world status? I highly doubt that this is possible.

I hope the crisis never becomes so acute that drug pushers or dealers will have to be executed but that may be the only sane alternative to continuing to do nothing constructive and gradually letting the nation slide into a mind altering drug haze both legal and illegal.

If there is a moral to be gleaned from history it is- “don’t become a hedonistic individual and participate in a hedonistic society”. Hedonistic individuals and societies don’t last long.

Hedonistic: adj. pursuing excessive pleasure
