THE TRUTH ABOUT DISTRESS*

Distress

Distress: v. to sense intense anxiety and sorrow and suffering

Some humans think that distress is the same thing as anxiety or sorrow or suffering but the truth is that intense anxiety and sorrow and suffering must be all present for true distress to be going on or the word distress has no unique meaning and is just a stupid identical synonym for anxiety or sorrow or suffering.

THE TRUTH ABOUT EXACTION*

maxresdefault

Exaction:  n. willfully and forcibly stealing property where pain and suffering is first inflicted on the victim

If a bully or criminal first commits violent actions against you and then asks for money and/or property then this is called exaction. Extortion is threatening force if property is not given so both exaction and extortion are subsets of stealing and it is only two unique ways of stealing where force is the dominant variable.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HARDSHIP*

Hardship Banner_full

Hardship: n. (suffering and/or economic loss) and/or injury to an animal(s) and/or organization(s) from a government law(s) and/or personal bad action(s)

Hardship is suffering brought on by economic loss and/or injury to an animal. A family which losses its major breadwinner due to death or a wounded human or animal suffers hardship until health is regained or in the case of the family some welfare assistance is obtained to ease the hardship.

Wilderness animals undergo great hardship when they begin starving due to habitat destruction and humans and organizations undergo great hardship during some economic downturns often precipitated by irresponsible government and business collusion.

Hardship can have predominantly external causes but sometimes personal bad actions such as drug or gambling addictions, illness, accidents, and financial irresponsibility can cause great personal hardship.

THE TRUTH ABOUT STOICISM+

Stoicism-e1397128859139

Stoicism: n. enduring pain and suffering and hardship without complaining and showing minimal emotion

When there is hardship, suffering, and even pain most of us get emotionally upset and feel that we have a right to complain about it. If you minimally complain and don’t get emotionally upset then you are said to have a stoical attitude or you are a stoic.

“Be a man and roll with the punches” is historically a call to male stoicism or putting up with much crap without complaining or getting overly emotional about it.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUFFERING***

why-suffering

Suffer: v. to experience relatively intense body pain and/or relatively intense mental displeasure

Few of us suffer intense body pain unless we have been in an accident or are approaching old age with stomach pain, severe back pain or joint pain. Pain killers are big business and many choose to use them rather than try and cure the cause of the pain which sometimes is incurable.

Many do suffer more mental displeasure and that may be suffering because of severely troubled offspring, failed relationships, living in an abusive marriage, death of a loved one, a terrible job, poverty, handicapping debt, devastating addictions, fear, or suffer from mental illness.

If other humans are the cause of your suffering then you can try escaping or ignoring them. If you are the cause of the suffering then escape is not an option and you will have to do your best to change your behavior or your circumstances.

Fortunately many of us may be unhappy but not necessarily suffering or experiencing intense physical and/or mental pain.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CRYING***

LS_shutterstock_53792650_free

Cry: v. to very intensely sense with identifiable body movements and tears which usually is the result of extreme suffering and/or unhappiness

Very young offspring cry readily and it is frequently because they have been abused physically or verbally, because they are in physical pain, because their toy has been taken away or have been punished with a withdrawal of a privilege, because they want attention, because their pet dies, or because they can’t get what they want desperately at the moment.

Adults cry because they have been abused, because of a death of someone close to them, because they have been cheated on, and sometimes out of sheer joy or being overwhelmed by some good event.

Crying frequently results from feeling overwhelmingly helpless or from intense grief felt at the loss of something which one considers very dear and important to them. Although I personally feel it is unmanly for males to cry the new generation seems to condone male crying in some instances.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SADISM

sadist-amanda-marcotte

Sadism: n. habitually getting pleasure from causing pain and/or suffering and/or humiliation on others

Some humans abuse their spouses and offspring and can be called sadists who get pleasure from inflicting pain, suffering, and humiliation on others.

Historically some prison officials were sadists who took pleasure in torturing the inmates and in some tyrannical governments opponents are sometimes tortured when imprisoned by sadist types.

Cruel and unusual punishment is forbidden in the constitution and it is just a testimony to the fact that sadism lies hidden under a veneer of civilized behavior which can resurface relatively easily if our guard is off.

In a democracy where tyrannical behavior is not easily tolerated sadism has fewer places to hide and sadistic bosses are frequently removed from positions of power. Even so there are some bosses who take pleasure in humiliating their workers and make them suffer with their verbal abuse.

As long as some humans engage in violent physical and/or abusive verbal behavior to try and dominate others sadism will continue to exist.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ENDURANCE

images (1)

Endurance: n. doing an unpleasant and/or difficult prolonged activity(s) and/or suffering prolonged physical and/or mental abuse

Endurance is frequently thought of as sports endurance such as running the marathon or dancing until you drop but it can also mean doing any other stressful activity for a very long duration such as driving the car for 36 hours straight.

Endurance can also mean suffering under bad circumstances for a relatively long duration such as putting up with much emotional abuse such as ridicule and put downs on the job or suffering with chemo treatment for cancer for a  long duration.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CRUELTY

Screen-Shot-2014-01-27-at-8.41.47-AM Historically capital punishment was frequently very cruel such as the breaking wheel, flaying, disembowelment, crucifixion, impalement, crushing, stoning, burning, dismemberment, sawing, etc. It was designed to create fear in the public so citizens would not commit serious capital crimes. Severe punishment was seen as a guaranteed deterrent against serious crime.

Historically you were punished for behaving badly or criminally with violence which was designed to create pain, suffering, or humiliation in the offender. Spare the rod and spoil the child was the accepted philosophy and practice by most parents.

Today cruel and unusual punishment is forbidden but there are still cruel humans who delight in causing pain, suffering, and humiliation in others. Concentration camps and genocide in some African countries which is relatively recent is proof that full blown human cruelty can surface at any moment if we are not vigilant against such atrocities.

A cruel boss may humiliate you by name calling using words such as stupid, crazy, fool, and incompetent. He can make you work many hours overtime without overtime pay and make you do unpleasant tasks such as cleaning the floors, windows, taking out the garbage, and mowing the lawn. Suffering by working very long hours and being humiliated may not be very painful but it can be psychologically devastating and cause much mental stress.

Cruel physically abusive spouses may physically abuse even their offspring and humiliate with profanities and name calling. Most choose not to live with cruelty and wind up eventually divorcing.

Sometimes pets are abused mostly through neglect or not feeding them and this is considered cruel behavior. Some pets are even beaten physically and are traumatized for life and no longer make nice loving pets for new owners. Many substandard zoos can also be considered cruel and unusual punishment for wildlife.

Human offspring are programmed genetically with the potential to be violent, aggressive predators and are basically vengeful creatures with an eye for an eye tendencies. Human society is constantly struggling to eliminate as much of this cruel behavior as possible but our prisons are still places with an abundance of cruel humans who even enjoy causing pain, suffering, and humiliation.

Cruelty: n. willfully causing pain and/or suffering and/or humiliation in an animal(s) and/or seeing the pain and/or suffering and/or humiliation of an animal(s) and sensing pleasure

CAN EUTHANASIA EVER BE JUSTIFIED?

85754847

Life is never black or white, yes or no in all cases and the same applies to euthanasia. I offer the case of my 99 year old dad as an example where euthanasia would have been a more dignified way of dying.

At 99 my dad had severe bleeding and breakdown in kidney function with a dark brown urine and catheter usage, had severe chest pains, and was so weak that he needed assistance in walking but was otherwise mentally alert and able to communicate. We probably could have prolonged his life with kidney dialysis and pain killers and he may have lived one or more years basically vegetating in a hospital bed.

Instead my dad courageously decided to end his life by not eating or drinking water under hospice care and effectively committed suicide. It took about two weeks to end his life under heavy morphine doses and occasionally spraying some water in the mouth because it was drying out. During the two weeks he had severe constipation and had forced painful removal of stool from his rectum. He was still living in his home and we visited him on a daily basis giving him his morphine dose orally.

Had I been in his position I would have asked to be euthanized and die peacefully in my sleep and not have to go through the mental and painful anguish of killing myself the natural way by not eating or drinking.

Does this case argue for euthanasia or should he have had kidney dialysis and painkillers administered in a hospital setting for one or two or maybe even more years at taxpayer’s expense?

My dad’s quality of life was so bad that he chose to die instead of living like a vegetable, in a hospital bed, and with the use of severe pain killers.
