Science has and is studying nature and has come up with a mathematical definition for efficiency. Science has shown how efficient lifeforms survive in greater numbers and succeed in reproducing for the benefit of future generations. Wilderness and wildlife is extremely efficient and remarkably does so in a non polluting sustainable way.

Now it is time to apply as much of this efficiency as possible to the human condition or behavior which is generally very inefficient, very polluting also, and not sustainable in the long duration. My primary focus will be the efficiency of human behavior but I will momentarily digress to show the role that efficiency plays in wild nature.

Without getting mathematical I will try to explain the fundamental principles of human efficiency and hope that this will eventually convince you that human efficiency is a very desirable and even a moral necessity. If you are WASTING time and energy and often money also in the pursuit of a just goal(s) then you are being inefficient.

For humans wasting time and energy in the process of achieving a goal(s) morally is being inefficient. Notice that the goal which you are trying to achieve is a very important consideration because some goals require little energy and some goals require much energy in a short duration.

Using predators as an example, cheetahs spend much time using up very little energy while stalking their prey but put on a tremendous burst of energy in a short duration when they commit to catching prey, the goal. When the goal is to stalk prey you can erroneously conclude that the cheetah is wasting time but the truth is that it is not wasting but conserving energy which it needs to catch prey in sudden bursts of energy expenditure. The goal is to catch the prey and if the cheetah is very inefficient it will fail at catching prey too many times, waste much energy, and ultimately risk starvation and death.

Why do I say that inefficiency is USUALLY immoral in nature. Well, if the predator is super efficient then the possibility that he will catch and eat all the prey may lead to starvation and death also since there is no more prey to hunt. That is why most predators are not super efficient or catch and kill ALL the prey that they hunt for.

For humans becoming an adult and making good money in some profession is a laudable goal. Many have spent little time and energy acquiring a useful education which includes important subjects for the technological world such as math, science, and economics. Many have taken the easy way out by taking subjects which don’t require much time and energy or effort and find themselves with college degrees which are job poor and with so few sellable skills that they wind up working in starter jobs at minimum wage.

For humans useful goals are the most important and if you don’t consider yourself academic material because of insufficient ability then a vocation is a more practical and logical choice to try and achieve.

Before launching into a comprehensive discussion of the immorality of inefficiency it is important to address one major objection and that is that there are efficient moral humans and efficient immoral humans and criminals. You could argue that efficiency is amoral and applies equally to all kinds of humans. An efficient criminal will get away with his or her stealing and lying more often than an inefficient criminal who will more readily get caught and punished. An efficient moral human will succeed much better in having a good family, good friends,  earning a good reputation, and gaining better social status than a moral but inefficient human.

Efficiency is really the morality of NATURE and whether you are predator or criminal OR prey or law abiding moral human, if you are inefficient then you will be punished in some way in the long duration. So efficiency is a universal morality for all lifeforms on the surface of this earth. The efficient will be rewarded most of the time and the inefficient will be punished sooner or later most of the time.

For human behavior, making too many of the same mistakes over and over again, talking too much or being verbose, spending too much money and time on relatively trivial pursuits such as games and compulsive shopping, watching too much mindless TV, arguing instead of discussing, procrastinating, not being punctual, incompetence, spending too much time and energy on bad habits such as gambling, pornography, promiscuity, drugs, alcoholism, gluttony, lust, etc., and all these human behaviors have an inefficiency component which I consider immoral and which most current moral humans consider bad behavior most of the time.

The goal(s) that you are trying to achieve and the means used are very important when considering the immorality of inefficiency. If your goal is to make money then there is the moral and immoral way of doing it. If you lie and steal efficiently, both immoral acts most of the time, to get money, then you don’t seem bad from the efficiency standpoint but you are using immoral means since you are lying and stealing which is of primary importance and considered bad.

Yes, efficiency is not a good or bad behavior but depends on the means used to achieve a goal also. It is the age old question of whether the ends justify the means. In times of peace to maintain social order and peaceful interaction between humans it is not wise to permit lying and stealing which leads to social chaos in the long duration if accepted or permitted.

Gambling is bad for most humans because it is an inefficient use of money which they usually end up losing. However, risk taking is a form of gambling by entrepreneurs and is vital for progress to be made in society. If your goal is to make money via a new business venture then it is usually moral to do so and if you are efficient then you should make a profit if the investment is a sound one and you provide a service or product which customers need or desire.

Morality is a rather complex issue to discuss and what we have so far established is that it is a moral behavior if the means to get to a goal(s) is a moral process and the goal(s) itself is socially desirable. Finally, it is even a better or more moral outcome if it is done efficiently.

You can be a very moral or outstanding human but if you do so inefficiently then you are immoral to some degree although not chronically immoral. So for all those thinking that they are morally flawless or impeccable, if you are inefficient then you still are not a perfectly moral human, especially according to nature.
