A resolution is frequently a formal decision to do something based upon a vote or consensus of a group.
When individuals resolve something then it is frequently a firm decision to follow through with some action(s). A resolute human is a very determined human who has made a choice and is firmly or strongly committed to it.
New year resolutions are frequently made but the reality is that few actually follow through on them for very long and fail. The reason for the failure is that the resolution was not strong enough in the first place and many relent and go back to their old bad habits.
When you resolve a problem this means that you usually have solved it in some way with determined action(s).
