Repel: v. to force an attacker and/or subset(s) to retreat
Repelling an enemy is causing them to retreat. Repelling mosquitoes is also causing them to retreat from an attempted attack on your skin and blood. Shark repellents also sometimes work and they are usually chemical formulations which sharks don’t like.
