This is a brief summary of the edX course Scientific Parenting by Dr. David Barnes at the University of California at San Diego. I learned a lot about the current psychological research into parenting done worldwide. I enjoyed the scientific analysis of the research but for most I would just recommend that you audit the course for free and just watch the outstanding video presentations of the material which is comprehensible to the average layman and a joy to watch an excursion into very intelligent easily understood presentations.

The most impactful knowledge about psychological parenting research is that almost all the studies are correlational and that means that there are no provable cause effect relationships in this research. The result has been much controversy which suggests that the correlation between two variables A and B may in fact be incomplete and that variable C or D may in fact be better correlated with the gathered information from questionnaires.

Several myths were debunked and one of them was that bilingual students or children are in some way better at learning and smarter than monolingual children.

Another myth was that autism is caused by vaccines. Follow up scientific evidence simply does not support this. Still further the original source of the popularized myth article turned out to be Wakefield who had a very small sample in his testing and it turned out that he had a financial interest tied to the conclusions in his later debunked research paper.

Yet another myth was debunked and that is that learning to play a musical instrument increases your learning ability in academic areas which just isn’t so and is a false assumption.

Another myth that was based on unprovable research conclusions was that a sense of basic morality is innate or inborn in young children and that they inherently prefer humans with good over those with bad behaviors.

Another myth that was debunked was that there are unique learning styles which students primarily use to learn things such as visual, auditory, and verbal styles of learning. It was shown that there are no unique learning styles and that most learning is a combination of visual, verbal, and even auditory cues so no one unique style actually exists that is used to learn with.

There is another myth that accelerated learning, advanced placement, or grade skipping leads to students who are socially or relationship handicapped. While there are some exceptions which are evidence for social maladjustment the vast majority of gifted students are not socially handicapped in any significant way.

What I learned was that ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is on the increase in the US population largely because psychiatry has tried to officially label it as a disorder in the DSM-5 psychiatric handbook. The handbook has assigned symptoms to it which are now being very subjectively used to diagnose and treat children who show discipline, hyperactivity, and inability to concentrate problems in school. The result has been a precipitous increase in diagnosis of ADHD in children followed by what I think is an unethical medication of these students with pills that alter the brain chemistry often with adverse long duration side effects. Some states only insure diagnosed ADHD students so just like the psychiatric profession there is a money incentive to label someone as ADHD which is theoretically now a mental illness even though other societies in the world do not have such high rates of ADHD.

What I also discovered was that the Nature vs. Nurture or Genetics vs. Environment debate is still unresolved in much parenting research and there is some debate as to whether genetic inheritance from parents or environmental factors play a larger role in parenting success in specific areas of parenting which are discussed or investigated. For example in studies of aggression in children there is some debate as to whether aggression is primarily a function of the environment such as the kind of discipline, peer role models, financial poverty, etc. or is it primarily inherited parental genes with a tendency towards aggression compounded by aggressive parents as role models?

I really liked the course Scientific Parenting and would highly recommend it to present and future parents.

The following 10 psychiatric disorders are controversial because they either aren’t proven to be serious medical disorders, are badly defined, don’t impair normal functioning, or are misdiagnosed too frequently like bipolar disorder and ADHD and subject humans to addictive non curative psychiatric drugs which alter normal brain chemistry, cure nothing, and often result in bad side effects which are then treated with more drugs.

If you are taking a drug pill for your “mental illness” chances are very great that you have been scammed into a lifelong addiction by your biased psychiatrist and the drug companies which are raking in billions of dollars a year. Follow the money and corruption is what you usually find at the end of the big money trail.

About 60 years ago only about 3 to 5% were diagnosed with mental illness. Today it is about 25% and the percentage is rising steadily on a yearly basis. Even young children with behavioral discipline problems are being given pills for ADHD as the quick fix diagnosis and treatment solution. Only .5 % are diagnosed with ADHD in France and in many other European and Asian countries and in the United States it is as high as 9% and rising fast!!! Just these statistics alone are proof enough that the gullible public is being scammed by the drug companies and psychiatrists.

There are 374 mental disorders more accurately called behavioral disorders which appear in the psychiatric manual and the recommended treatment is pills with terrible side effects in almost all cases.

If you have mood swings then you are bipolar, if you are unhappy and unmotivated in life then you are depressed, if you get overly excited then you have an anxiety disorder, if you are hyper  then you have ADHD, if you have bizarre thoughts then you are schizophrenic, and if you can’t concentrate, sleep, or think clearly then you need to be on one of the many medications being prescribed by the psychiatric profession.

The classification of behavioral problems as mental illnesses has gotten so out of hand that there was even a suggestion of classifying one as “compulsive shopping disorder” and “compulsive internet disorder” to be treated by yet another drug!!!!!!

The notorious unprovable “chemical imbalance” in the brain is being combated with drugs which cause real new chemical imbalances in the brain called side effects which are frequently the same effects as the diagnosed pseudo problem. Psychotic drugs frequently cause more insomnia, more anxiety, more manic behavior, and more depression etc., especially when you start to withdraw from the prescribed medication.

The Federal Drug Administration has “professional” advisors on its committees who have conflicts of interest because almost all of them are being paid by the drug companies and many earn a very good income from drug company sponsorships.

Most of the psychotic drugs have effects no better than placebos or sugar pills and there is no proof that any of the medications cure anything but merely mask the symptoms and frequently have severe debilitating side effects treated with more pills.

The biggest and most dangerous special interest groups are the drug companies with their big ad campaigns with many prominent psychiatrist names as sponsors. The drugs cost pennies to make and yield profits as high as 5000% if you don’t include their bogus expensive clinical trial costs.

9% of school aged children are diagnosed with ADHD in the United States. Only .5% are diagnosed in France and the numbers are significantly less in other European nations. Good nutrition and good parenting styles are the probable reasons why ADHD is so low in France. American offspring need better parenting and better food not drugs with bad side effects!!!!!!

The same can also be probably said for misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and other “mental illnesses” where popping a pill is the answer and not healthy eating and radical behavior modification to cure what is frequently a bad dysfunctional lifestyle and not mental illness but merely a bad deviation from normative behavior.’’

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a problem of not being able to focus, being overactive, not being able control behavior, or a combination of these. Many children with discipline problems have these same symptoms so many of the pure discipline problems are being misdiagnosed with ADHD.

ADHD is present in adults and in young offspring and it is frequently being misdiagnosed and treated with drugs with undesirable side effects. Many young offspring with discipline problems are being drugged to try and calm them down instead of applying appropriate discipline and exercise and healthy eating in the home and school environment. Psychiatrists are to blame for many misdiagnoses since they frequently attempt to do a quick fix of the discipline problem with drugs and not behavior modification which is what is really needed in most of the cases which are not that severe.

Humans are a diverse group with physically active pasts and hyperactivity is actually an advantage in nature. Unfortunately hyperactivity is frowned upon in the sedentary culture which we are trying to create and forcing normal “ADHD” human beings to function abnormally in a class or office setting.

Primitive societies have almost no ADHD problems so the diagnosis and treatment is a sign of an unhealthy sedentary modern society which tries to discipline the active behavioral deviants with sedative drugs.
